Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

It's fun when you're young and sad when you're older. Be careful out there kids.

[–] Zorcron@piefed.zip 22 points 2 weeks ago

It can be either when you’re either. It’s all about knowing your limits, and for some people, old or young, their safe limit is 0, and that’s ok.

Your liver and kidneys disagree.

Lagavulin or Laphroaig if I want to be fancy, pirate juice (rum) if I want to have a ripping good time, or wreck the hoose juice/the devils ribena if I'm in a particularly (self)destructive mood.

Generally whatever is locally produced as long as its not some bourgeois operation that costs more than imported stuff, consumed the way its meant to be consumed, eg baijiu and many wines are quite nice accompanying spicy food, but unpleasant on their own and overpower any more subtle tastes. Vodka is excellent for bringing out more subtle flavors, but pointless by itself.

My hottest take: tequila is genuinely unpleasant to drink and tastes worse than everclear.

completely agree, I e.x. ditched Finlandia Vodka after finding out that it is owned by Coca Cola and I am also not a big fan of Tequila.

I sometimes buy flavoured Vodka & mix it with Energy but sometimes I drink the normal shots it depends on the quality and taste of it

Ugh, Tequila. When I was in my early 20s, my bar drink of choice was a shot of Cuervo Silver with a salted rim and a lime slice. I puked it up so many times that even the scent of straight Tequila makes me gag and I'm nearly 40 now.

Even the "good stuff" like the Don Julio my husband occasionally enjoys sipping.

I can still enjoy a good margarita on the rocks though, so it didn't completely destroy Tequila for me.

I'm an IPA, Chianti or Malbec, Prosecco, and Gin girly though for the most part.

FYI:

"Alcohol is a toxic, psychoactive, and dependence-producing substance and has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer decades ago – this is the highest risk group, which also includes asbestos, radiation and tobacco."

https://www.who.int/europe/news/item/04-01-2023-no-level-of-alcohol-consumption-is-safe-for-our-health

I still drink on holidays but I thought that this whole cultural thing where we glorify alcohol was behind us as a species. Gen Z doesn't really drink much at all and bars are closing down all over the world.

I recommend only drinking socially. In college I drank alone all the time. It's a very depressing road to go down. Would younger me have quit drinking if I had known it was cancer causing? Probably not.

Be careful with alcohol!

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Social drinking easily leads to social pressure, and then abuse, and then making an ass of yourself.

Treat it like it's a party drug. Because it is.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I'm so happy I dislike the taste of alcohol enough to not seek it out, yet appreciate alcoholic drinks enough to enjoy a buzz when it's available.

[–] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm the opposite, I like the taste of alcohol, but I hate the buzz. Much rather do weed. I seek out alcohol-free variants of drinks nowadays.

[–] LORDSMEGMA@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

On the plus side, jokes on anyone who tries to steal my kidneys

[–] laserm@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Why would I do that when I could just go to Liverpool, where is a pool full of livers..

[–] craftrabbit@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 weeks ago

I don't understand why I should drink alcohol

I'm not a huge fan since I have a drunkard in my basement. I haven't had any alcohol since Christmas at my family's house before then. I haven't had any since September. It's really not worth it and going without saves me money
