Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). 3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. 4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

This is Portland Police saying this, so a slightly smaller grain of salt than the Rock of Gibraltar sized one for the DHS tweet.

Male shot in the arm released to FBI custody, female shot in the chest still hospitalized and stable.

If they were, they wouldn't have called 911...

So I suspect the "ties" are gonna end up something like testifying against them and getting refugee status here as a form of witness protection.

I'd say we should wait for details, but we can't count on local PD in a major city to be the truth tellers either.

"Ties"-- being from the same country, or maybe an adjacent one.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

I was waiting on actual identification of the victims. It wouldn't have surprised me if CBP got the wrong ID.

“Hello, 911? Your friendly neighborhood cartel bro here. Yeah, just wanted to tell you my exact location so you can come pick me up while I’m incapacitated. No, this isn’t my burner phone, this is my regular one with the caller ID. Took out a Fed on my way down, so you might wanna send some heavily armed cops too, tee hee :3”

"Couple was extra-judicially murdered because..."

There is no way to conclude that sentence that anyone should give a rat's ass about. If you buy this sort of post-facto justification for the Brown Shirts murdering people, you're a Nazi.

I don't disagree, but for the sake of accuracy, both are still alive. One shot in the arm has been discharged from the hospital, the other shot in the chest is still hospitalized but stable.

[–] ech@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago

For the sake of fairness, attempted murder is just as bad as successful murder in terms of intent. It's good that the victims didn't die on the spot, at least.

So the person that was shot, who has ties with a gang, had no pending charges and was released from the hospital? That sounds a lot like, "We had no reason to shoot them."

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Released to FBI custody.

The federal government's criteria for being considered a member of Tren de Aragua is 1. being Venezuelan and 2. having any tattoo - despite the gang not using tattoos as an identifying marker. So, I'm gonna need more than "unspecified ties" from the police to consider this anything more than justifying another attempt to murder someone trying to escape the US gestapo.

Yeah, pending any real evidence, I'm gonna call

BULLSHIT

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 18 points 1 week ago

Police do not have the right to pass judgement.

I know I’m preaching to the choir here but I wish they’d stop saying this shit. They shouldn’t be commenting on any investigation in public so a fair trial can happen.

As soon as the term deport was used to describe the wildly unconstitutional act of kidnapping someone people showed they were willing to pass judgement first in order to justify the violation. You can't just walk that back.

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Unspecified equals imaginary in my mind.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 11 points 1 week ago

Even if they both have a history of violence, that doesn't mean them being shot is remotely acceptable.

[–] BigTuffAl@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 week ago

Tren de Aragua is not real. Why would anyone even bother printing this. Equivalent to saying, "Uh those thugs were the grinch actually!!"

Give the servants of fascism no quarter in your communities.

[–] BarbedDentalFloss@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I can't find anything about this on xitter or bluesky. Usually these kinds of events have more people talking about them.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The big one was the DHS post shortly after the shooting:

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

The guy in the White House is affiliated with a foreign prostitution ring when are they going to get him?

[–] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago
