Media: "HAMAS, HAMAS, HAMAS, TERRORISM, STAND WITH ISRAEL, ANTISEMITISM SKYROCKETING"

Elections: Far-right surge

shocked-pikachu

[-] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 4 points 9 months ago

Tbf after watching a bunch of news casters talk about how Anti-semitism is rising it is pretty weird to vote for the guy talking about how it's the Jews who moved the brown people into your suburb (not referencing shit that Wilders have said, just referencing general far-right statements).

[-] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 5 points 9 months ago

It's a mainstream liberal position to ignore antisemitism within their own ranks, or even those that openly identify with uncritical support to Israel etc. while placing an emphasis on "imported antisemitism".

Racism? Yeah, probably. But definitely useful for fascistic politicians.

[-] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 32 points 10 months ago

It's only a shock in the shocked-pikachu sense at this point

[-] Comp4@hexbear.net 21 points 10 months ago

Yeah sadly this is not suprising. Probably just the beginning as well. Really not a fan of the West speedrunning towards the 4th Reich.

[-] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 9 points 10 months ago

I always expect the bad outcome. I haven't been pleasantly surprised yet 😌

I translated the reaction of the general-secretary of the Belgian Workers Party to the Dutch election results. I think it makes a lot of sense.

"The election results in the Netherlands are tough but not unexpected.

The cocktail of decades of blind austerity, bureaucracy and frantic marketization had already exploded on March 15 this year (when the BBB [= right-wing farmers party] won the election).

No lessons were learned from that. On the contrary. The centre-right parties copied the rethoric of the extreme right that keeps on kicking downward, to the people who have the least. Perhaps it is better to look at those at the top?

Public utilities were privatized; public services stripped; education and health care came into the hands of professional managers; child care became a haven for private equity funds; the social rental sector became a shadow of what it had once been; and the Dutch labor market became the most flexible in the entire European Union: one in three workers has a flexible employment contract.

Wages remained static and profits went through the roof. Harrowing poverty increasingly came alongside obscene wealth. Over a million Dutch people sank below the poverty line. According to the latest counts, there are 32 thousand registered homeless people. Food banks that still had a meager six thousand clients in 2008 have seen that number increase to 120 thousand fourteen years later. Meanwhile, the number of millionaires reaches a record high: as many as 317 thousand citizens own assets of more than a million euros.

That is the policy of the last two decades. And those policies were pursued by the centrist parties, all of them. If we want to stop the extreme right, it can only be in breaking with those neoliberal policies, rather than now preaching headlong more of the same centrist policies.

And yes, it can be done. If we dare to look upwards instead of downwards."

To add one thing to this analysis: the collective profit of all non-financial companies in the Netherlands was higher than all the wages combined. Total wages were 330 bilion euros, total profits of non-financial corporations were 344 billion, and profits of financial corporations were 190 billion. That means 534 billion euros in profits for 330 billion in wages.

Shock for Europe

No pretty sure this is fairly normal for Europe.

[-] VILenin@hexbear.net 20 points 10 months ago

Looks like the euros are adopting the American “this is not who we are” line

[-] Teekeeus@hexbear.net 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Standard occidental line "this isn't who we are, we're civilized progressive enlightened aryans, not like those racist backwards savages of the non-western world"

[-] 2Password2Remember@hexbear.net 24 points 10 months ago

how is an anti-islam populist winning a shock for europe? what would be shocking about honky devils electing a honky devil?

Death to America

[-] johnbrown1917@hexbear.net 17 points 10 months ago

A month ago it was still between the suc-dems, libs and christian dems. Then a few days before the election the PVV suddenly shot up and it was between the Suc-dems, Libs and far right. And then on election day they suddenly won with a 9 seat margin and the suc dems came in 2nd.

So we will probably get a far-right-lib-christian dem coalition. Only good thing it was not the fashy party[fvd] who shot up.

[-] Barry_de_Sloper@hexbear.net 21 points 10 months ago

We should just let the sea reclaim us, our country was a mistake.

[-] johnbrown1917@hexbear.net 9 points 10 months ago

One hand yes, on the other we are the only country that could polder doggerland to connect the brits to mainland europe.

It would very funny.

[-] usernamesaredifficul@hexbear.net 19 points 10 months ago

only shocking to people who didn't expect continental Europe to remain horifically racist

[-] PigPoopBallsDotJPG@hexbear.net 18 points 10 months ago

The sad thing is, this isn't even a shocking up-set. The Netherlands has been flirting with right-wing populists ever since the rise of Pim Fortuyn. And PVV was already getting a significant number of seats in previous elections. The balance was now just slightly changed because the neoliberal right in the form of VVD fucked up governing so hard that a fair number of liberal votes that used to go to them ended up getting split between neoliberal center-right (NSC) and neoliberal center-left (GL-PvDA).

In somewhat better news, other chud-adjacent parties (FvD, BBB) also didn't really perform well. Which means any extreme agenda items PVV may have aren't going to survive a coalition.

did the tulip people elect him because he was anti-eu/nato? (apart from being violently racist, which naturally appeals to garden people) Doesn't matter, the eu will pull a meloni on him anyway.

[-] yuli@hexbear.net 13 points 10 months ago

we have a huge housing crisis while the ruling party (VVD) has fucked up a lot since 2010. he offers a compelling scapegoat: it’s of course the migrants that leave our children without homes, take all our benefits, commit all the crimes and whatever else you want to blame them for. the current cabinet fell over the handling of asylum seekers and his position as outsider and opposition poses him as the alternative we need to his voter base. he has also been less vocal/more palatable about his most racist views.

[-] 2Password2Remember@hexbear.net 7 points 10 months ago

the eu will pull a meloni on him anyway

what do you mean by this? i'm totally out of the loop here

Death to America

[-] Teekeeus@hexbear.net 10 points 10 months ago

The current pm of italy ran on a far right platform that included, other than the standard right-wing shit, an anti-eu/nato stance. However, the eu/transatlantic types have managed to strongarm her into doing what they wanted anyway

[-] Gosplan14_the_Third@hexbear.net 6 points 10 months ago

The right wing politicians are also simply grifters a lot of the time, that don't actually believe in everything they peddle.

[-] GarfieldYaoi@hexbear.net 13 points 10 months ago

Sometimes I can understand where Brexit is coming from, if I was British, being distinct from Europe would be a point of pride. (Yeah, I'd have to be Bri'ish, but my point stands).

[-] kot@hexbear.net 5 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Nah, one of the main factors why brexit happened was because brits are really afraid of brown people. They wanted to be separated from Europe because they think continental Europe is full of immigrants.

Will this effect the monarchy or are these guys supportive of it?

[-] Egon@hexbear.net 11 points 10 months ago

Everybody in Europe loves their monarchs more or less. We've been propagandised enough about them "actually making money for the state" despite it not being true.

[-] 420stalin69@hexbear.net 1 points 9 months ago

Dictatorship on standby, just in case Europe needs some “stability”
