US and vassal state fascists think they're untouchable (despite crippling themselves with sanctions and getting their game in Ukraine upended). They live in a supremacist and chauvinist bubble where they think they can do no wrong, think they are exceptional, while they commit genocide, immiserate popualtions and provoke war after war via proxies. But Russia won't have its hands full with Ukraine forever, and China wont take bloody noses forever. This ends much like every other bloated belligerent violent empire.
news
Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
US just full on pirates now? Ahoy. Yo ho ho and a bottle of Donald J Trump is a pedophile rapist.

little known fact: the US Coast Guard is the guardian of all the coasts and the open oceans.
The United Kingdom issued a statement saying it supported the U.S. seizure of the Russian-flagged tanker.

Like obedient little vassals
don't care, didn't ask, plus you're white
Listen to us! We're the Empire! The old Lion still has it's mighty roar!
Oh yes USA, I will give you a good thorough suck.
"U.S. naval forces boarded the vessel in international waters outside the territorial waters of any state, and contact with the vessel was lost," the statement read. The ministry added, "No state has the right to use force against vessels duly registered in the jurisdictions of other states."
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked at a press briefing on Wednesday if the tanker seizure risked a larger conflict with Russia. She said the tanker was a "Venezuelan shadow fleet vessel" and "deemed stateless."
"This was a Venezuelan shadow fleet vessel that has transported sanctioned oil. The vessel was deemed stateless after flying a false flag and it had a judicial seizure order. And that's why the crew will be subject to prosecution," she told reporters.
So by this logic, the US gov can just declare any oil tanker as stateless, even if another state says it belongs to them. What is Russia even going to do as retaliation here? Seize US oil tankers? It seems like the only logical way to stop US piracy.
What is Russia even going to do as retaliation here?
They could finally win the war in Ukraine, that would be a good start
I think The Russia Federation underestimated much much life and money NATO was willing to waste dragging out the war in Ukraine. US figures did openly state the war is about weakening Russia, and the USA barely cares about its own people, let alone anyone in Eurasia. Maybe Russia also underestimated how weak, corrupt and sycophantic Europe leaders had become?
every day I am more of a z poster
The argument here under the "rule based order/international law" (lol) would be that you can't just change to a Russian flag mid voyage after evading seizure, so that the "stateless" classification still applies, as it did during the initial seizure attempt.
I still don't understand why the US thinks it gets to decide when and where and what other countries trade with each other.
cmon man, yes you do
"International" "Law" at work yet again
Surely at some point there's gonna be retaliation? I get all that might makes right shit but surely they're not gonna let the US just take everything at anytime completely unopposed just because they keep the finger on the red button
The US has probably done a risk assessment that shows that they can steal the occasional tanker or container ship and other countries won't go to war over something like that, so the US will try and disrupt international trade as much as possible without causing other countries to escalate. I expect we'll see more stuff like this in the future, probably in SEAsia to disrupt China's shipping next.
It feels like right before WW2. When the world was in the appeasement phase.
The latest reporting says that the UK aided the US in the act of pirating the tankers.
hexbear loves piracy until the usa does it
damn, you're good
I would love to see the exact mental gymnastics libs are going through in their heads to justifying still believing in Russiagate
"No no no, Putin is playing 4D chess but I can see the cheeto is really his pawn"
they're doing spheres of influence posting now
