Might wanna change the flag for EA....

Roblox fascinates me as someone who casually knows it. There's a huge ecosystem there just sitting inside a bigger gross child exploitation ring.

Billions of money sifting through kids hands while adults play simulation games with hardcore rules

Or so I'm led to believe.

Why aren’t the “game focused” companies within Sony, Microsoft, etc. listed on here?

[–] Infrapink@thebrainbin.org 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Because Sony and Microsoft make most of their money from other sources. That isn't to says their game studios aren't big, just that they don't make 90% of revenue.

[–] falidorn@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

But they have gaming divisions which are technically their own companies. This chart js definitely cherry-picking. I didn’t even mention that “gaming” is highly subjective already. There’s more than just MS & Sony missing from this chart.

Tencent is huge as well. Though only around 50% of their revenue is from gaming.

Would like to see Minecraft itself though

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 5 points 5 days ago

Because they would make Nintendo look tiny by comparison.

Sony would fall between EA and Nexon here. With a gaming division revenue of $31.5bn according to this: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/playstation-full-year-operating-income-jumps-43-to-28bn

Honestly thought Ubisoft was the biggest European games company, but it ain't even close.

Microsoft is about $3.9B BTW... Per another chart.

You can make the argument that they do not belong because their primary businesses are Windows, Office, and AI. But if you're looking for them because of Xbox, Bethesda, Mojang, or their other brands, that is where they would rank. Between NCSoft and NetMarble, with a USA flag.

Edit: ~4B$ seems way low for Microsoft... I dunno what I was thinking. Leaving the mistake for context. Maybe I meant $3.9T? But again that's not just gaming. Gaming is a drop in the bucket for them and Xbox is failing and Bethesda has sucked for like 10 years or more now, closer to 15 if we're honest. Mojang (Minecraft) is successful and Obsidian is killin' it, but in the grand scheme of things? Microsoft doesn't matter here.

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

According to this source Microsoft has $23B revenue for gaming only.

[–] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I am surpised that mojang isn't here

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

They're owned by Microsoft? Would you expect BioWare to have it's own entry outside of EA, too?

[–] Couldbealeotard@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Where's Microsoft on the list?

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 2 points 5 days ago

Microsoft doesn't earn more than 90% of their revenue from gaming, so it's not on here.

[–] TheUnicornOfPerfidy@feddit.uk 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)
[–] Decq@lemmy.world 25 points 5 days ago (1 children)

On a list of non publicly listed companies I would imagine

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

Also, I'm not sure if they really fit the bill, since probably most of their revenue comes from providing infrastructure, not games.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

lol Ubi. Why are they still treated as one of the big ones? Like Mojang alone is probably way more valuable than Ubi in total. They basically double A now and they should probably focus on double A productions. Also their market cap is even lower today they are a sub billion euro company now.

[–] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Is Groombox actually that big or is it based on what the CEO says it is worth? I remember reading some ridiculous statements about their net worth.

[–] eRac@lemmings.world 3 points 5 days ago

These are all public companies. Roblox is RBLX on the NYSE. It hit an all-time high of $141/share in September, and this infographic was probably produced then.

It's now back down to $80/share, which is $56.8 billion in market cap.
