Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Ok but you see, Yuri is appealing to straight men, and as we all know, that is the only demographic ever worth appealing to

:(

Ikr, wheres the yuri for actual lesbians? I want yuri because I'm a girlkisser not straight :3

For yuri authors that choose to list a gender the vast majority of them, 80%+, are women. While it varies by distributor the audience for yuri works is made up of close to 50/50% men and women.

Furthermore, if you look at the tag numbers on sites like MAL or mangagao you will find that yaoi manga outnumbers yuri manga by more than 5x:

Also, while its male audience has grown in the intervening years, yaoi originated as a genre primarily by and for women who were attracted to men. Bara is generally more written by gay men for gay men.

Kininatteru Hito ga Otoko ja Nakatta/The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy at All is one people are getting more enthusiastic about these days. The “green yuri”, as it’s known.

Tsukiatte Agetemo Ii Kana/How Do We Relationship? Just ended its run after 7 years and it’s pretty great and down to earth. (Sidebar: absolutely horrible title translation. A more literal translation of 付き合ってあげてもいいかな would be something like “so you wanna date, or…” or “I guess I could date you” and these capture the tone a lot better. I normally despise the chuds that are like “translators that use any kind of slang or artistic license/interpretation are shit! Translation should be literal! I completely don’t understand how Japanese works!” But this title choice, imo, is just bad and the work is great)

Both, but not at the same time. Do not mix Yuri and Yaoi.

Yuri+yaoi double date disguised as two straight couples. And they live together in a sitcom.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago

They cancel each other out

The problem isn't that there's not enough yaoi, but that what there is is mostly problematic fetish material by people who don't seem to understand the concept of consent, and who encourage unsafe practices to young gays. More healthy porn/romance please.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago

Yeah, so much stuff feels vaguely homophobic.

[–] belated_frog_pants@beehaw.org 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You've never been to a Japanese manga store if you think this. Its so sad how small the yuri sections are compared to the sea of BL

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago

This is mostly my experience on lemmy (there's 2 yaoi communities, each haven't had a proper post for about ~6 months). Outside of here, it's the opposite.

context: the DTP (democratic technology party) which is center-right and the SDP (social democratic party) which is center-left are parties in Virtual Democracies, specifically the DTP in the 5th Republic of Owlia and the SDP in the Democratic Republic of Julia. The DTP and SDP are in the yuri alliance. also both owlia and julia are discord virtual democracies but Julia actually has a presence on the fediverse on C.IM even though it was used to advertise it once (at the time of posting).

Most yuri isn't geared towards lesbians though, at least from what I know.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago

Most yaoi is geared towards straight women

[–] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 4 points 1 week ago

Be the change you wish to see in the world

[–] dingleberrylover@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Apparently, I am out of the loop. What or who is Yaoi and Yuri?

[–] morphballganon@mtgzone.com 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Gay cartoon porn. Yaoi is of male subjects, yuri is of female subjects

[–] KSPAtlas@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 week ago

afaik they aren't necessarily porn, I think regular romance media can also be classified as yaoi or yuri

[–] termaxima@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Seems logical to me. Boys = yuck, Girls = beautiful. Just remove all the boys ! Voilà.

Whereas Yaoi is "Oops ! All boys !" aka "Oops ! All yuck !"

Nota Bene : This comment was written by a lesbian. But y'all know I'm correct, deep down, don't you ?
