I’ll go first: Silence Unknown Callers and Filter Unknown Senders on iPhone. No unwanted calls or texts. If someone really needs to reach me but isn’t in my contacts, they can just send a text - it goes into a separate list.

Shortcuts from control center to home assistant. One touch each to open my garage door, turn on the hvac fan for a set time, and toggle a particular light I use frequently, etc.

Super handy to be able to add them to that part of my phone. I had only known about watch functions, the app itself, and automations.

LineageOS lets you randomize the lockscreen number positions. Sometimes people watch you unlock your screen in the subway and bus to steal your phone, so this helps a lot.

[–] kadu@scribe.disroot.org 2 points 33 minutes ago

Some also offer a fake code you can input that rather than unlocking the device, triggers a full storage wipe.

I've recently discovered completely by accident that if my screen is off and I hold down the power button instead of just tapping it, it turns my flashlight on and off without having to wake up and unlock my phone.

Yes...it seems like such a dumb thing to have not known all these years, but still...to me it was a game changer.

In some Samsung phones there is a voice control for the camera. You can hold it up and say "shoot" (or cheese and a couple others) and it takes the picture. Best thing ever. So many times my hand is in an awkward position and I can't hit the button. Like sticking the phone into the engine compartment to see what's broken or something. All phones should have this.

On most phones you can also press one of the volume buttons to take the picture.

True but using both hands to hold the phone really steady in low light and using a command word to control the shutter is a really handy feature I've enjoyed.

Just a simple one, but the Calendar app. Being able to see and add to my schedule any time and place is invaluable.

..located at the bottom side of the device.

Unlockable bootloader.

Maybe that's not underrated on Lemmy, but mainstream reviews never even mention it.

[–] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Im gonna go a step further, what's even more underrated is the ability to flash custom verification keys and relock the bootloader with any OS you choose

[–] fleem@piefed.zeromedia.vip 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

oh heck yeah, where do we find that!?

Google pixels and fairphone

Swipe down on bottom of the screen (from anywhere) to open notification bar. So handy. It very occasionally seems to stop working, but a reboot sorts it.

I think it's technically an accessibility feature, and it may be unique to Pixels, I'm not sure? Either way, it's essential for me.

For anyone looking for it, it's not in Gestures as you might expect, it's in One Handed Mode, and is one of two options for what the gesture does:

[–] Fiery@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (1 children)

The only thing one-handed mode does for me is an on/off toggle that basically halves the screen. (So that everything can be reached with one hand I suppose) [OnePlus 13R]

[–] sanguinepar@lemmy.world 1 points 10 minutes ago

Oh, that's a shame. It's really tremendously useful. Probably a third party app that could replicate it, but I'm not sure.

Smartphones small enough to hold and operate with only one hand.

In spite of what ~~Apple~~ Tim Cook seems to believe, my hands are the same size they were in 2007. I constantly need to hold and operate my phone while moving and holding something or using my other hand for something else. It’s non-negotiable. I would suffer tremendous productivity loss and literally miss connections if I needed two hands to hold or fully use my phone.

So unless the next guy promptly undoes the damage Cook has inflicted on Apple, the SE3 is going to be the last iPhone I ever buy.

“Why don’t you buy…”

No. To paraphrase Steve Jobs, “If they have to buy an accessory just to use the phone, you’ve already blown it.”

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

Hell yeah. Unfortunately I have the last one made, I believe. I'm on Android though and I believe they are now extinct. The funny thing is from my personal perspective they killed sales. I spent extra to get a phone small enough to use with one hand. There were only two options, both $800. Now that there are none, I'm gonna buy a cheap phone next time.

Sadly this is a battle we've lost. I was angry when I had to give up my first 4.3" phone for a 5" phone. I'm now trying to keep new purchases under 6.2", which would be insane back then, and have just accepted that not all of the screen is accessible and unless wearing a coat you always need a bag just to carry your phone.
