Let me guess: this is intentionally done to show up at the top of flights sorted by price low -> high lists.

Maybe, or maybe it’s to curb the law that force a refund in certain cases. You want a refund? It’s 64$.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

They do that with shipping items on ebay all the time. cheap item price 100+ shipping

This is just silly. I recently saw Las Vegas hotels doing something similar though to a much lesser extent where it's called "resort fees". Should be illegal but it doesn't affect me since I'm not traveling to the US

[–] BoycottTwitter@lemmy.zip 111 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Those "resort fees" were part of Biden's FTC's efforts to crack down on junk fees. Trump is now undoing that work. https://www.investopedia.com/trump-has-undone-biden-s-war-on-junk-fees-11772720

I was recently building a web portal that could accept payments. I was looking into ways to avoid the extra credit card fees we'd have to pay to accept them. I was told I can't charge an additional "credit card fee" because a lot of states outlawed them, but was told I could just relabel that fee as a "convenience fee" and it would be completely legal.

Welcome to America. Fuck you.

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 1 week ago

It's not just Vegas. It's also very popular in short-term rentals (like AirBnB) and other gig enterprises.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

More like "extort fees"

[–] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 week ago

For hotels, I'm wondering if this is a trick to meet a government rate.

In theory, the resort fees are intended to help pay for upkeep of “perks” like the pool, gym, entertainment venues, etc., whereas your room fee is paying staff and keeping your room clean.

[–] a_non_monotonic_function@lemmy.world 55 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Bullshit, mostly.

[–] tdawg@lemmy.world 37 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I had a hotel charge me for "services." Like bitch that's in the price of the room!

[–] C1pher@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Maybe “services” entitled you to getting your dick wet, but you didnt ask. Always gotta read the fineprint.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 15 points 1 week ago

That's like renting a flat and being charged extra for doors.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

OK. May we see the itemized list?

[–] NullPointerException@lemmy.ca 54 points 1 week ago (2 children)

On the invoice it doesn’t seem so. Just 520$ per person. That link on the pic is just text.

[–] rc__buggy@sh.itjust.works 58 points 1 week ago (1 children)

So literally no itemization, just $520.

OK, that is indeed bullshit.

[–] teegus@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm guessing it's the "peak dates" thing. They have a base price aka. minimum price when planes are mostly empty and then put on a surcharge for when demand is high, instead of altering the base price.

volatile, unpredictable or fluctuating operating costs and fees

Socialize the Costs and Privatize the Profits

edit: What confuses me is how these things can be "volatile" and "fluctuating" before you bought the ticket?

[–] NullPointerException@lemmy.ca 18 points 1 week ago (5 children)

On the invoice it doesn’t seem so. Just 520$ per person. I’ll try.

I recently did a return trip from Dublin to Boston and back. Each ticket was 1 Euro; rhe rest was airport taxes, government levies, etc.

In the past, pre-covid, 1 Euro tickets were not unusual. Part of the reason why Ryanair became so dominant was that they contracted with secondary airports that had much lower fees, so the final price was below what the competitors could offer.

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 15 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yes, Ryanair. But even they could itemize what you had to pay extra for. OP got this instead:

0

What confuses me is how these things can be "volatile" and "fluctuating" before they bought the ticket?

edit: somebody made the Ryanair experience into an operetta song! https://youtu.be/ZAg0lUYHHFc

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Why are adults and children’s prices the same. Just charge per seat at that point.

[–] brygphilomena@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Could be reporting requirements or KYC stuff. It might differentiate how much information to gather on the passenger or put restrictions on where they can sit, like exit rows.

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 6 days ago (1 children)

If it’s an airline, it’s likely to allow them to more accurately predict passenger weight. Planes have weight ratings, and need to be sure their loads are distributed appropriately, (like not having everyone in the very back of the plane). Differentiating the tickets will help them flag potential weight problems before boarding even begins.

Or all of the above. I doubt it's just for a single use.

[–] viking@infosec.pub 2 points 6 days ago

They just block two different options in the software so that they could differentiate.

Large families still having the possibilty to flight from time to time even if they are not so rich?
