OK folks of the DT. Xmas day celebration for 'orphans' at my place is a go mission. Please DM me by end of tomorrow for address and public transport info if you are wanting to come.

I have secure bike parking, and there's plenty of street parking available. General area is Thornbury.

Timing is 2 pm to 5 pm approx - this is a bit flexible.

Its come as you are, and if convenient bring a plate of something snackish to share. I'm doing chips & dips and given the likely weather there will be a pot of soup. BYO grog. I'll have soft drinks and tea and coffee available.

PS: an orphan for the purpose of this event is someone who doesn't have another event planned for the day, plus trustworthy significant others.

This is so wonderful. I’m at partners family Xmas day, but appreciate the offer very much, because if it weren’t for that would be a Xmas orphan! I hope you all have a very nice afternoon!

I hope we can meet up sometime!

[–] tone212_@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wonderful! Have dm'd you the address.

I will be working in the heart of Box Hill for the foreseeable future. Lunch is going to be EPIC

[–] SpinMeAround@aussie.zone 7 points 1 day ago

Well, the work year has ended and even though I resigned from my position over 6 months ago, I'm just floating around the company, doing whatever's needed (sometimes that's just being the office cheerleader).

Who knows what next year will bring. For now, nearly 2 weeks off to chill!! Hopefully a city adventure, maybe a winery, good food and probably a shitton of computer games.

Christmas cheese has been purchased, wine is at the ready!

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Just about done for the day, just gotta make the bed and then I'm crashed

[–] imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Same. Shattered but it's so nice sitting here sipping a wine and knowing I made it to Christmas. Gonna risk sitting a bit longer. Being....happy...is a good feeling

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

πŸ™‚

same, I really don't have much to do tomorrow, main thing is to remember to buy a bottle of my fave wine so I can get sloshed on xmas day ...lol

I survived my trip to Melbourne. It's the first time in a while that I haven't travelled back in the dark, it felt slightly odd being able to see everything.

[–] Catfish@aussie.zone 3 points 1 day ago

Back to books?

Found Mistress of Spices on TV. I did own this. It had a sightly unusual binding format. Can't find the bloody thing. Did I discard it? Potential brain problem

What's the worst chrissy present you could personally ever receive?

I'll give an example. One of daughter's teachers are vegan and still received a shit load of chocolate.

[–] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

My parents gave me personalised numberplates one time. This was up in NSW where you have to pay a fee to have personalised plates, so they essentially got me an extra $100 on top of my rego every year.

And I drove a silver car so they got me gold number plates. I know no one would have actually cared but I felt like everyone was looking at my car when I drove out of the RTA with the new plates on because they clashed so much

[–] Catfish@aussie.zone 7 points 1 day ago

Do not give silver people gold things! And ask first if white gold counts.

[–] CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It needed some fluffy dice to go with.

[–] tombruzzo@aussie.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That would have been a better car gift. It was a Mazda 323, nothing special. I know they did it because my brother had personalised plates but he had a Subaru Liberty that was much more interesting and he's much more of a car guy than me

Ooof that last one. Never met mine. Glad to keep it that way.

ETA: when I was full GF I was given a GF cook book. Great yes? Until you discover it's American and 3/4 of the ingredients are 'a can of X brand soup' that doesn't exist here

Here's the necklace I bought my friend, I cleaned the wire with CLR and it came up beautiful. After some looking on line it's a 1920s Czech emerald glass necklace.

here's the 1969 3D Moon Landing postcard, I have to buy a new frame for it. I reckon it's kinda cool.

[–] TheWitchofThornbury2@aussie.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That necklace is beautiful!

Last day of work.

Hanging on by a thread. If anyone at work tests me today, Christmas will not be Merry (or any other hobbit)

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

red's a festive colour, just saying. As are entrails about a tree.

Ham and salad sandwich for lunch was absolutely delicious. I'm probably still in the honeymoon phase with salads and the love will wear off as summer drags on, but after a toastie-filled winter a salad sandwich is wonderful.

Used a carpet scraper to clean the dog fur out of the carpet. Would highly recommend for anyone with floofy friends and carpet. I would not put carpet in a house.

Whilst I was doing the carpet cleaning, I found a saw under my dad's bed in addition to a bat. I know there have been quite a few home invasions lately, but idk if this is a bit of an overreaction. But anyway, hit and slice those gangsters mate!

[–] Catfish@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Bat πŸ¦‡ or bat 🏏?

A weird win today with one of my laptops. It was running out off space because a busted Windows partition was taking up so much room. It also stopped doing system updates to Linux, which I thought was because Secureboot was on and blocking it. I took the SSD out, reformatted it, even unplugged the battery to the motherboard clock, and turned it all back on. Secureboot was still on and locked by the BIOS, but Fedora has reinstalled anyway.

Now I just need to check if it slows down on Google websites like before. If Google sites work smoothly it will feel like a new laptop all over again

[–] Seagoon_@aussie.zone 6 points 1 day ago

morning break, coffee and some panetonne

then put another load of washing in the machine, then off to the market
