Years and years of struggling with quitting because my brain never really hit the zone where smoking itself seemed unappealing and now somehow out of nowhere the stench is absolutely disgusting. Like my boyfriend comes home smelling of cigarettes and its so intensely gross i have to breath through my mouth. The offer of a cigarette doesnt work as well anymore i think i finally hit it folks i might actually be there. My lungs ravioli rejoice

That can't have been easy. Respect.

I have to thank tobacco companies for making cigarettes absolutely disgusting. I dont remember them being as foul as they are today but theyre about as nice as smoking damp newspaper fished out of a sewer

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Probably enshittified like everything else

[–] Snort_Owl@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hasnt even been real tobacco for ages its literally shredded paper sprayed in tobacco juice lol

Honestly? It helps me stay quit. I bought a pack of camels a year ago, not premium but not bottom of the barrel. The fact that they tasted worse than I remember helped reinforce my conviction to stay away.

the smell for real. it was nice to wash all my clothes and have them smell good again, for ever.

sense of smell and taste sensitivity heighten dramatically after a while. its crazy how tobacco smoke deadens everything.

FYI, adding in a cup or more of baking soda in the washing machine really helps thoroughly wash out extra stinky and crusty laundry.

Sounds like you felt like you have long covid. Those are shitty side effects. May you all enjoy things like smelling candles and eating food more.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

nah, this was pre-covid. it was from smoking tobacco. sensitivity returned after cessation over time.

In the present study, the 40-odorant University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test was administered to 638 subjects for whom detailed smoking histories were available. Smoking was found to be adversely associated with odor identification ability in a dose-related manner in both current and previous cigarette smokers. Among previous smokers, improvement in olfactory function was related to the time elapsed since the cessation of smoking. Logistic regression analysis found current smokers to be nearly twice as likely to evidence an olfactory deficit than persons who have never smoked.

shit fucks up the entire cavity from mouth to lungs. luckily the associated sensory deadening is reversible.

I meant to express that these effects must feel similar to long covid. I'm grateful people's senses can bounce back if they quit.

This happened to me. Something flipped. I considered it a metaphorical miracle.

It's fortunate they smell so shit because more people probably would smoke if it wasn't so gross-smelling. Like why do you think people use fruit flavor vapes?

[–] Snort_Owl@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

All vapes smell the same to me like that candyfloss smell and i hate that also

[–] HexaSnoot@hexbear.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

I love the smell, but I'm not willing to have a nicotine addiction for it. These people could use a sweet cotton candy perfume. And maybe normalize fruity perfumes for adults. Clearly, with all these vapes, adults are highly interested in sugary and fruity scents.

Yep. It makes it easier to stop if you get tempted too. Whenever I cheat (usually from social smoking) I get tormented by the smell of cigarettes in my beard and the awful gritty feeling in my teeth and that puts me off of resuming the habit.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

Same, I'll bum a smoke off someone occasionally if I'm drinking and while I do enjoy it in the moment I hate the way the smell clings to my facial hair. It definitely helps keep me away from smoking more often (as well as cost, health impacts, etc)

[–] HexaSnoot@hexbear.net 1 points 3 weeks ago

How is that gritty teeth feeling happening from smoking? Never smoked a cigarette so idk.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

I smoked off and on through my 20s and find that the longer you go without them the worse they taste, but I was never into it as more than something to do while on breaks / driving somewhere.

Im lucky blood clots or some kinda vascular system dysfunction scared/harmed me into quitting because I still love the smell and vibes of cigarettes yet I have zero temptation. I smoked a pack or two a day of Marlboro Red 100's for 13 years, after many failed attempts at quitting I have no idea how I'd do it if I didn't have my brain rewired by severe pain because I fucking love the smell of second hand cigarette smoke

[–] Snort_Owl@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

Smoking malboro reds is self harm… i smoked those too i think they made me hate it faster

[–] ghosts@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

Congratulations! Same thing happened to me with booze a while back, I just suddenly soured on the whole idea.

My unsolicited advice is to write yourself a little note or letter on your phone about how good you feel after a few days/weeks off. Reading it back has saved me from random urges quite a few times over the years.

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

congratulations

You look like you have a strong sense of smell too

[–] BobDole@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

I had that happen a few months into my final quit: one of my coworkers came to talk to me after a smoke break and it was revolting. Now, it’s been ten years quit after ten years of at least a pack a day. So, welcome to the other side. It only gets better.

[–] Riffraffintheroom@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Weird it’s been 15 years and the smell still makes me jones

I'm so glad to be in this space too. About a year ago, I bought some mini cigars. I was already done with cigarettes for a few years but missed the occasional cigar. It was the worst mistake. I instantly regretted it, and after 2 minutes, I threw them away. I still love the smell of cigars, but damn, smoking them again was awful.

[–] Snort_Owl@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

I find cigars just burn my tongue instantly and then i cant taste anything. I dnow if im smoking them wrong but theyre kinda boring

[–] Juice@midwest.social 4 points 1 month ago

Congratulations! I had my last cig 2.5 years ago, I was at a conference and saw a bunch of people smoking, thought why not, its been a while, bummed one and then smoked that sucker. And it was disgusting. I felt sick, I couldn't get the disgusting smell out of my nose for like a week.

It feels good to be sickened by cig smoke

I just started quitting again, I managed to go from March 2023 to November of 2024, but fell off the wagon cause of the US election results. Now I'm employed I decided that it's better if I don't continue the habit that actively gives me cancer, so I'm taking the long weekend for the holidays to get back on the wagon and get that first 3 day hump of withdrawal out of the way.
