news
Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:
-
To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
-
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
-
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.
Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:
The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.
-
Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.
-
Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.
-
Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.
-
Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.
-
Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.
-
Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.
-
American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
-
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.
-
AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.
At least Japan is, unquestionably, a US colony without any sort of autonomy and had their military regressed to the point where this conversation has to take place.
And I'm not saying that's a good thing overall, at all. If instead of dropping the bombs, we just executed their heads of state and blocked their number like we were trying to dodge a landlord we owe money to, the world would be a better place. At least their imperial ambitions have been permanently neutered (and their population has a genuine disgust towards such a thing) compared to Germany. Germany shouldn't have like, the manufacturing strength they do now.
and their population has a genuine disgust towards such a thing
no they dont, her polling is still at 75% and just over half of the japanese think that her comments on taiwan were good
I'm sure their US master is completely fine with one of their vassals developing their own nuclear weapons.

Article 53(1) allows regional organisations to take enforcement measures against an enemy state, without prior Security Council authorisation, if these measures were provided for under Article 107 or aimed at preventing a renewal of that State’s aggressive policy.
Article 53(2) defines an enemy State as any State that was an enemy of any signatory of the UN Charter during World War II. This covered, in particular, Germany, Italy, Japan, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Finland and probably Thailand.
Hmm... would this count, I wonder?
“Probably Thailand”

wikipedia added that.

Let's check!
It gives both Russia (never signed a formal peace treaty with Japan, still technically at war, has land disputes with Japan currently settled in its favor but which Japan refuses to give up on) and China the legal rights to nuke Japan off the face of the earth, claim it was the only way and walk off scott-free. Fascists never learn.
The thing about Japan too is its' a US vassal. But the US thinks they're clever so could have them develop nukes, orchestrate a situation where they end up using them on China, get hit back hard in the face and China is left reeling and limping while Japan is finished and a martyred cause celebre for the west while never again risking being a competitor. So there is a very real risk and problem with them having nukes that doesn't exist in nations that are independent, no matter how deranged their leadership may be their ultimate goals tend to involve survival of their nation.
In line with my believe that every country should get exactly one nuke
Every nation gets 1 nuke. It gets put under the equivilant of their white house. Everyone else gets a button for every other nuke.
Peace in our time.

She is just the worst in every possible way.
This is the worst news to drop on Japan since Hiroshima 1945
"行吧"
"Japan needs to get nuked again"
I'm pretty sure that America will destroy Japan if they try to pull something like this.
They didn't do it with Isn'treal why would they do it now?
99% chance the yanks are pushing this to just next week place yank nukes pointing to Beijing using the flimsy excuse of Japan developing them independently.
But, in this year, why bother with flimsy excuses anyways?
What's Yankees going to do if they try to break free in the future?
Israel is a different case entirely. They're a SSettler colonial project which depends entirely on NATO to sustain itself, Japan doesn't really need America.
Americans already have enough nuclear submarines pointed at Beijing from the pacific anyways.
I need one too please if we're putting in orders.
I remember a girl built a nuclear bomb as a science project. She has to do it for me for a only good cause…
I mean yeah every country needs to possess nuclear weapons, otherwise it's just a colony of some other country pretending to be independent. Thinking you can be a country without nukes in 2025 is like thinking you can be an army without guns. Like sure you can larp but the moment a real country comes along and tells you what to do you have no recourse.
