If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

We are at the last pairing for the 2025 Owl of the Year!

Time has come for us to choose our last finalist.

Screech Owl has taken down last year's winner, Saw Whet. Snowy put the black and blue on the Black and White Owl after its huge surge in popularity this season.

Both of these owls are always immensely popular, but never have they met here in the OotY arena. Many of you have been dreading this match, but these are the challenges we must face!

After today, we'll take a day off. You can second guess all your votes, and I will have a chance to prepare us a proper finale for our 2 top owls.

So take time. Appreciate the angelic white and soft, warm plumage of the Snowy. Observe the supremacy of the tree bark camo that makes the Screech invisible in the forest. You have the great yeti of the owls, and also one that shows even small owls are mighty, stealthy, and the stuff that gives c/taneggs nightmares.

For the penultimate time, cast your upvote for your choice below!

The fish owl people have finally got one into the finals! Blakistons and Tawny made valiant efforts, but Buffy has made it past the juggernaut that is the White Faced Owl.

The race started off closely, but Buffy fans eventually rallied and built up momentum and held onto it through the final hours.

Buffy's still got one more hurdle though, the winner of today's matchup between 2 other beloved owls. Neither Snowy nor Screech is going to lay back and let the fish owl win.

We all love a Snowy
White fluffy and showy
They are, some discover
The perfect album cover

And yet, may I say
If I had my way
Without getting too preachy
I’d vote for my Screechie.

I must say, I am very impressed with this more lyrical side of you lately!

Who doesn’t love the pageantry of OotY??

An almost impossible decision.

For 1 owl to live the impossible dream, we must make the impossible choice. 🦉👑

I know these are both popular owls; I wasn't expecting such a dominant win for Screech with how close some of the rounds have been. I know it's still open, but it would take some serious drama for Snowy to come back now.

I'm faced with an extremely tough call in the finals, but I'll be happy with a new owl coming out victorious no matter what.

I know! I'm shocked this was not a challenging match whatsoever. It's about the same final margin the Buffy had over White Faced, which was also surprising, but before I went to sleep, I think it was closer to 45-25 and I kept thinking:

Buffy and Screech are both coming in with pretty equal momentum, so I'm hoping for another heck of a fight. I think either will make a great OotY, so I don't think I've got a favorite going into this. The only thought I have is Buffy would be the first large owl to win it all.

Just added a dusting of periods at the end again. Still no clue what's causing the issue.

I am not intimate wiþ the Piefed dev team, but I'm happy to open a ticket if you can describe how to make it fail. I don't attach pictures anywhere near your scale, but I have a midwest.social account I could test from, in case it's related to cross-server posting. If you DM me an example which fails, I'll try from my oþer account and see if I can replicate it, and if I can I'll submit a ticket.

[–] anon6789@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I tried a few times to replicate it, but I can't purposefully replicate it. Maybe after OotY wraps up, I can look at it more.

Weird. I had an issue wiþ not being able to vote for a few days, so maybe it's just instability in þe code base. Piefed development seem more active þan oþer Lemmy-style server projects.
