I kind of want to fight my fucking sous chef over this shit, like, she's sorta my friend and she usually has good politics but like she has offered not even the slightest shred of sympathy over my extreme outrage over this shit, I guess having internalized the "well no food service job just LETS you take home food" shit but it's like, come fucking on, you fucking "anarchist," what bigger fucking easier mutual aid could you possibly effect than by pushing for management to let people take shit home at the cost of FIVE FUCKING CENTS OF STYROFOAM per like TWO POUNDS OF FOOD.
I'd get it if she were like, look, I just came out as trans in a chud ass state, I don't have the political pull or managerial authority to really push back on this, I'd be like, okay, I understand, pick your battles where you can you know, but from how she's acted she literally thinks it's RIGHT to disallow people taking home food
it is the fucking grapes of fucking wrath every fucking day at this place, every meal period will see at least 30 pounds of food of various sorts thrown away because it's been out on the line or it's no longer fit to serve, and the only reason it isn't all going home with people every day is one beanpole of a shithead who would fall apart the second you threw him into a pit
Every day there's a headline like this that makes me fucking seethe that I wasn't born in China
I can't even imagine this happening in Aus. We'd have people vandalising the shit out of them, or just talking all the food for themselves. And that's assuming local supermarkets would even bother donating at all.
I think you are too cynical about your fellow man.
Food pantries around here are heavily locked up when they are closed because of vandals. Not people desperate for food, but people who will just break in to smash everything.
And they are very restrictive about how much people are allowed to take because otherwise you get rich fucks "slumming it" and coming in and buying up everything for half the price in the grocery store.
Unfortunately my cynicism is coloured by my experiences working in these sorts of places. There's no way you could just have a food pantry fridge on a street around here for people to help themselves to without it being ruined by some shithead. It could be different in other parts of the country, I'm in an area with a lot of suburbs, a lot of atomisation, so other places could actually be better for this.
Some of the cities in the US have community fridges throughout them. They don't get fucked up or taken advantage of really, but it's not enough to go around either
