Possibly my favorite moment from that era was the bit on the daily show where Stephen Colbert explained Bush's gaffe as a perfectly normal variation of this expression, and then showed couch cushions with the phrase embroidered on them, complete with the ellipsis to indicate the long pause Bush did as he derailed.

I was 14, and trusted that the US had adults in government that knew more about the situation than I did.
A lot of liberal boomers really liked and trusted Colin Powell for some reason, so his vouching for Iraqi WMDs really sinched it with that demographic.

In both instances, so much of what you believe is dictated by your media diet. The right wing media circuit has been turnt to 11 on fentanyl since the Obama administration. Just getting this shit blasted into your brains 24/7/365 is going to change your perspective and credulity.
Combine that with the virulent hatred aimed at anyone born south of the border - with a special hate-on for Venezuelans building since the failed Bush Era coup in 2002 - and you get folks who are simply looking for an excuse to kill, kill, kill.
Fentanyl is the modern conservative version of 9/11. It terminates further analysis and demands you pick a side.
It doesn't matter what it is - as long as it feeds their need to look down upon others (no matter how absurd the premise), that's all they want & need. Hatred & bigotry used solely to blame others for their perceived problems instead of being honest with & about themselves.
