Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

All my Youtube feeds are filling up with AI videos made within the past month or two. It's just an endless stream of newly created content made by people who are just chasing after just a little bit of attention. It's all just rehashed crap, remade videos scraped from previous videos, remixed and remade again and again.

It wasn't so noticeable a year ago but now it's getting worse. It's just an endless stream of new AI videos and there is more and more every day.

A year ago, it was decently made AI video with a bit of realistic content ... now it's just all made up crap of all sorts filled with all kinds of made up information to sound as authentic as possible. It's so easy to just scrape together a bunch of content, send it all through an AI and make it sound like some sort of authentic documentary that would fool the least attentive viewer.

It's mind boggling that Google is letting this happen.

Even if I pretend to be a stone cold Google accountant, and look at this... YouTube is a gigantic golden goose. It's strategic, it's a cultural lynchpin. And they're going to let it wither just to boost next quarter and avoid saying "AI is a problem here"?

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm sure they plan to make even more money later on when AI is no longer a free service.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago

I'm sure that is going to be super profitable /s

You should use your subscribed feed. Also, newpipe

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I always skip the recommendations or pushed content ... I spend my time looking for things I actually want to watch ... and more often than not, it's content that is over two or three years old.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Recommendations are actually great if you skim through them on a video you liked and save promising videos to ‘watch later’. Personally I have a dozen ‘watch later’ playlists by topic, with dozens videos in each — so I could live off these playlists for a year.

and more often than not, it’s content that is over two or three years old.

Bingo.

Friend, content that's over a year old is all you can trust. There's a lot of it, and its great.

The date filter is the slop filter.

Switched to newpipe after getting fooled by an AI nature documentary. I felt like such a dumbass.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 2 points 2 days ago

I also got fooled by some history docs that used AI. Some videos only used for some image generation, but others the script really felt like it was written and read by AI.

[–] sznowicki@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well, pre AI it also wasn't that cool. I will never forgive BBC making me believe in flying penguins.

I trusted you BBC and you made me look like a fool!

This was my character changing moment. I broke bad, never able to trust anyone. All because of BBC flying penguins.

[–] HurricaneLiz@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Haahaha 😂 Did part of you want it to be real? Part of me wanted the "nature documentary" to be real. It was about a lioness at a zoo adopting a bobcat kitten that had escaped into her enclosure from the neighboring one. I cried.

Stories like that circulated on Reddit before AI. The latest one was about a lion or a tiger being friends with the goat brought for them to eat. Iirc the animals had to be separated after a while, because they started squabbling.

There are uBlock/Adguard filters which you can use to block shit. My homepage is just a blank. On Android revanced has that option to hide shit as well. Or you can use Newpipe.

wasn't so noticeable a year ago

A year ago, YouTube didnt have its own AI video creator. Now it does.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The other day I accidentally looked at YouTube without adblock, without history off, and it was a nightmare. Just AI slop and rage bait. Absolute trash.

I pretty much only use YouTube for music and very specific clips. It's a bad place.

[mode="snob] read more books. [/mode]

In my experience, YouTube without history is the garbage. It looks like cheap Jerry Springer-style tv that apparently people in my country watch.

I taught YouTube for years what I watch, and thankfully recommendations mostly reflect that. I even open links from social media in incognito tabs to avoid polluting the recommendations. Although I'd still watch maybe one out of ten of them.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Yes, but, there are so many creators literally just talking in their cars, it't not hard to find people who are authentic.

[–] FigMcLargeHuge@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

going to the garbage and remixing everything so it's shiny and new.

You can't polish a turd.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yes you can. You can polish it, paint it, cover it in glitter, name it "Duke of York", whatever. But it will always just bel a turd

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Polished, painted, glittered “Duke of York” turd has 1.5 million followers and 6 million views

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Yes of course. As opposed to the crab-people, the mole-people and even the lizard people, turd-people have very succesfully invaded our midst. These days there are just as many, if not more, turd-people than actual people. This isn't just a conspiracy, the numbers back it up.

[–] ininewcrow@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 days ago

It doesn't mean that people always try

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

now it's just all made up crap of all sorts filled with all kinds of made up information to sound as authentic as possible.

NOW? YouTube has always been made up crap off all sorts with all kinds of made up information.

Nothing has changed.

Sure a lot of the AI videos look like shit, YouTube videos have always been shitty. In some cases that is their charm.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

it's basically a modern version of RONCO late night ads.

[–] YesButActuallyMaybe@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

Ditch YouTube maybe? It was nice when it wasn’t shit but now it’s what it is. Start to unfollow and Unsubscribe and do something else with your time.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago (3 children)

If your feed is filling up with those, then it's because your watching them. So the algorithm is giving you more. Is like my recent swath of woodworking videos. I'm watching lots of them, so I'm getting recommended more.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago

You watch that PeopleMakeGames video on Roblox and youtube spams you with Roblox player videos. Not every recommendation is spot on. Whenever I watch anything political (like the recent case of jair bolsonaro attempting to get rid of his ankle monitor with a fucking soldering iron), the recommendation spams me with right wing propaganda

I almost never watch anything outside private browsing or newpipe, so it's easy to see how shit gets recommended "by default".

[–] shrewdly9010@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The YT algorithm these days will suggest content based on what other people that you share warching patterns with. So you can avoid ai videos lile the plague you will stil get them recommended.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago

Yeah I mean to a point but you're not going to get your entire feed filled with this shit unless you're specifically clicking on those types of videos quite a bit. I watch quite a bit of YouTube especially late at night when I'm sitting there playing games right before I go to bed and I've seen my algorithm change multiple times as far as what it suggests. There's two or three channels that are pretty well known AI slop that I get recommended on a decent amount because some of the stuff is okay and some of the stuff just has a good thumbnail and a title so I'll click on it. But the more I watch other shows the more of that stuff gets recommended overall.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Problem is that AI didn't present as a "genre" and you get AI slop across the gamut.

I started a video because the title seemed like something I was interested in and the thumbnail seemed fine. Then within the first few seconds it was obviously lazy ai slop.

Short of limiting yourself to known acceptable channels. You can't really stave off the AI slop. Some categories get hit less often, but they are all over the place.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 3 points 4 days ago

I avoid this by having no YouTube feeds.
