"I never meant to hurt him, only kidnap and potentially murder his wife!"

In his defense, the article does a much better job of explaining the apology than the headline

DePape said Tuesday he went to the couple’s home to talk to the former Speaker about alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 election, and that he planned to wear a costume and post his interrogation of her online. He claimed he was looking for the former Speaker and other targets to confess to their corruption.
...
DePape’s attorneys have argued the charges do not fit as he was not trying to go after Nancy Pelosi because of her official duties.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this guy's attorneys are wrong.

Adversarial process at work. Each side works against each other as hard as they can within the bounds of law and the jury (or just judge, depending) decides.

It's ridiculous, but the defense attorney working as hard as possible against the prosecution. If there's even a tiny hope of it working it's worth trying.

They're still wrong because criminal law has the concept of transferred intent.

[-] jopepa@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Just had to google that, but it’s astounding that needs to be spelled out into law. Before that was inked out could you just call a mulligan if you killed the wrong person?

This is why we need a scientific system and not an adversarial one. We need the truth regardless of who is harmed by it.

The guy went down a rabbit hole that eventually led to him deciding to kidnap and/or murder a sitting US Representative because of a fucking youtube comment? Jesus Christ. This fucking country...

Edit: fixed her job title

Oh god, your comment is making me go down a path I hadn't ever considered before. For whoever reads this in the future, just know that @elbucho pushed me to do it.

[-] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

I read your comment and it made me stick my dick into a light socket.

Thanks ;-)

She's in the house of representatives but yeah

[-] elbucho@lemmy.world 19 points 11 months ago

Shit. My bad.

[-] Gargleblaster@kbin.social 76 points 11 months ago

What in that article explains his apology better?

He switched from left to right because of a youtube video and then broke into a government official's house with a deadly weapon.

He then used the deadly weapon when he knew he would be caught.

Fuck him.

His sad snff snff Rittenhouse dance in court is just to avoid life in prison.

Oh, look, it's another non-apology "apology":

"I’m sorry that he got hurt"

That's what you say when you back into someone in a volleyball game or something. Paul Pelosi wouldn't have been "hurt" (and ended up in hospital for most of a week) if a crazy guy hadn't broken into his house, tied him up, and hit him with a hammer.

For the record, an actual and sincere apology for a major wrong consists of saying you're sorry for what you did, you know what you did was wrong, that what you did affected the other person in negative ways, you apologize for the injury(s) suffered, you offer some kind of restitution or compensation, you promise to avoid the action in future, and you take concrete steps toward avoiding that action.

"He wasn't my target and I'm sorry that he somehow mysteriously and inexplicably got injured when I broke into his house, tied him up, threatened him, and hit him with a hammer and I just don't understand how that happened" is not an apology.

[-] Ashyr@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago

I’m pretty sure that’s the best apology you can offer when you plead not guilty.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

“I’m sorry that he got hurt”

"I didn't think making contact with his body with a hammer at full force would do anything but give him a light tickle!"

[-] jeffw@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago

Maybe saying “much better” was over the top. But I think the headline makes it sound like he only expressed remorse about hurting the wrong person, instead of the fact that he expressed overall remorse.

[-] atocci@kbin.social 4 points 11 months ago

Yeah I think the headline pretty neatly sums this one up. Nothing in the article makes that sound any better.

[-] LastYearsPumpkin@feddit.ch 33 points 11 months ago

Crazy how close he was to achieving his twisted goals.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 31 points 11 months ago

Stochastic terrorism.

It’s here! They cheer! Let’s deal with it!

[-] athos77@kbin.social 7 points 11 months ago

It's like the mass-shooters. They're all just "mentally ill", until they finally get their facist state, at which point the "mentally ill" suddenly become the SS.

[-] CarbonatedPastaSauce@lemmy.world 18 points 11 months ago

Yeah not a good excuse buddy. You hit someone in the head with a hammer, on purpose. You’re going down, scumbag.
