That may not be the best choice of handwear if you need to pull a trigger.

[–] mctoasterson@reddthat.com 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The AR-10 models from this time period do have hinge-open trigger guards. You drive out one pin and then the bottom part of the trigger guard hinges open to allow for cold-weather gloves to fit in and still be able to pull the trigger.

Interesting.

I think if a polar bear was coming at you, you'd be impressed with how quickly you got the mitten off.

[–] CHOPSTEEQ@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 month ago

Trigger guards on rifle designs are almost always removable precisely for this reason.

Maybe it's just the black and white, but she looks a bit like Carrie Fisher.

The first photo wasn't taken in the Netherlands by the Dutch .... it was on the planet Hoth

It's definitely a good idea to be armed then .... apparently there are Wampas there.

9/11 Al-Qaidah terrorists ruined our timeline of having sexy goth dominatrix rifle bearing feminist airline stewardesses screaming at Karens and drywall-punching boomer Kevins being dipshits before the plane takes off.

There's a line in Fight Club about an Armalite AR-10 carbine semi-automatic rifle. If memory serves this survival rifle is the only one that ticks all those boxes.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The Armalite AR-7 is a survival rifle for downed airmen. I have an OG model and it's a POS.

BTW, I wouldn't recommend the .22 AR-7 vs. polar bears. :)

My AR-7 is the worst rifle I own. And I own a LOT of rifles.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Keep thinking I can gunsmith my way out of it. Nope. Total failure.

[–] magikmw@piefed.social 1 points 1 month ago

The .22 is for being dead before the polar bear starts eating you.

[–] SolSerkonos@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The AR-10 is basically just an AR-15 but bigger. 7.62x51 instead of 5.56x45. It's a very neat gun and probably ahead of it's time, but it's not incredibly unique.

[–] Flamekebab@piefed.social 5 points 1 month ago

My point was that the specific set of features was uncommon in AR-10s:

  • AR-10 specifically
  • Carbine length
  • No select fire capability

So it tickled me how weirdly specific Fight Club is about it. If the line had been about the AR-15 it wouldn't have made me bat an eye.

On the off chance I do survive a crash and am stranded in the arctic…

The gun won’t be for shooting the polar bear

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Modern aircraft have all manners of redundant emergency beacons, some of which transmit their GPS location via satellite directly to a station, others simply emit a homing signal that can be direction-found and homed to by rescue aircraft. Within two hours (often much less) of your aircraft being reported overdue or its distress signal being picked up, a search and rescue aircraft will have taken off to head your way to parachute drop rescue personnel and supplies to keep everyone alive until extraction can be arranged. All you need is to survive long enough for them to get to you.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Based on the super low probability of a crash, and the even lower probability you'll survive it, just having the gun around is probably a net decrease to safety.

There's a reason this photo was shot in 1958 and not yesterday

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Is that for shooting the bear, or yourself so you don't have to suffer the bear?

[–] SirActionSack@aussie.zone 4 points 1 month ago

You shoot the dick in row 27 who took someone's window seat and made a scene about it then throw him to the bear.

If that's not enough you start lining up the people who magically don't hear the boarding-by-rows instructions and the request to raise their seat so the person behind can eat.
