The AR-10 models from this time period do have hinge-open trigger guards. You drive out one pin and then the bottom part of the trigger guard hinges open to allow for cold-weather gloves to fit in and still be able to pull the trigger.
Well I'll be damned! Checked my AR-15 and it has two such pins!

I think if a polar bear was coming at you, you'd be impressed with how quickly you got the mitten off.
Trigger guards on rifle designs are almost always removable precisely for this reason.
