After pursuing them for two years I finally got prescribed stimulants and ho-leee shit is it effective for me. I actually can do the thing I remember needs doing instead of putting it off

Yeah my reference is Limitless. Like obviously not to that extent, but that's what the difference felt like being able to actually function. I had ended up mentioning that I was drinking 2 monsters a day because I would get some focus from it but it would never last and the doc right off the bat was like 'yup. Your brain's way of trying to self medicate.'

You're not on a dangerous amount of stimulants?

what's that hyperfocus thing ? I thought adhd was essentially the inability to focus ? I have days like this, I start a task and I just don't look away for seven or eight hours. It's not exactly healthy, but if I pause for even a few minutes then I may not resume at all. Is that what this meme is referring to ?

ADHD is a problem with executive function - controlling focus.

So some folks with ADHD swing from not being able to focus on one thing at all to only focus on one thing to the exclusion of all else.

When we were about 12, a friend of mine would get so into reading a book he wouldn't hear his parents calling his name. It happened so much they took him for hearing tests.

That's how strong hyperfocus can be. (He was later diagnosed with the Inattentive type of ADHD).

And you didn't even mention how we even forget to eat or drink when something has caught our focus, to the point it's one of the most common memes. 💀 Only when the legs become jiggly on the way to the toilet it becomes apparent.

Ah, this I don't know. I have seen many memes indeed, but I don't function like this. I guess there's individual variability

Ok, thank you. Well... being in a "sensory bubble" while immersed into something intense (such as a book) sounds normal to me, maybe I've had this my entire life

Appreciate the detailing 👍🏼

Welcome to the club homie. Diagnosed at 34.

The other problem with hyperfocus is that along with not controlling when it happens, we also can't control what we're hyperfocusing on.

I failed university because I spent the first 2 weeks making a Minecraft mod. University was more important and also very interesting, but I just couldn't stop.
I'm still pretty proud of the mod though.

The problem is hyper-focusing on an awkward conversation you had ten years ago when you are supposed to be paying attention to the meeting. Or hyper-focusing on wikipedia articles about spiders when you are supposed to be doing laundry. But you don’t even realize it’s happening.

Surprisingly, stimulants like caffeine are the solution to that problem.
