ADHD is a problem with executive function - controlling focus.

So some folks with ADHD swing from not being able to focus on one thing at all to only focus on one thing to the exclusion of all else.

When we were about 12, a friend of mine would get so into reading a book he wouldn't hear his parents calling his name. It happened so much they took him for hearing tests.

That's how strong hyperfocus can be. (He was later diagnosed with the Inattentive type of ADHD).

And you didn't even mention how we even forget to eat or drink when something has caught our focus, to the point it's one of the most common memes. ๐Ÿ’€ Only when the legs become jiggly on the way to the toilet it becomes apparent.

Ah, this I don't know. I have seen many memes indeed, but I don't function like this. I guess there's individual variability

Ok, thank you. Well... being in a "sensory bubble" while immersed into something intense (such as a book) sounds normal to me, maybe I've had this my entire life

Appreciate the detailing ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

Welcome to the club homie. Diagnosed at 34.

The other problem with hyperfocus is that along with not controlling when it happens, we also can't control what we're hyperfocusing on.

I failed university because I spent the first 2 weeks making a Minecraft mod. University was more important and also very interesting, but I just couldn't stop.
I'm still pretty proud of the mod though.
