My first reaction is skeptical, based on how much I liked the first one. Brendan Fraser was perfectly cast in the role, but that role was “young adventurer hero”.

Twenty-six years later, there’s no way he’s believable at the role that made the original great. Will they write a more mature hero? Will he be able to pull that off. Will they model that off the way Harrison ford characters aged?

Seconded. It’s like watching Harrison Ford totter and groan through the later Indiana Jones films. I love the franchise, but the guy was tool old for the action. Hollywood hasn’t had an original thought in 20 years, and shoehorning old actors into reprisals of old roles isn’t great. Only one that was halfway decent recently was Top Gun, but even that was not much more than a ripoff of the Star Wars Trench Run.

Animation >>>>> Live action

Money goes to artists only, not to overpaid lofty privileged oafs.

Just make a new original film please. Im so done with nostalgia bombing

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The one with Jet Li is one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life and certainly the worst I paid money for.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

have you seen the most recent war of the worlds?

you should see it.

it's great 🤣

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That fiasco has been out 20 years already and can’t hold a candle to the 1953 original

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Srsly? That looks even worse

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

not just bad, but comically bad.

I don't know which news is better. The overwhelming victories in yesterday's elections or this. God bless America for once

I have never heard anyone say they don't like The Mummy.

The people I have introduced to it have all loved it, and only two people have commented on the CG looking a little dated.

And for some it was their "oh I might be bi" moment.

10/10 movie, any time I see references to it I have to re-watch the movie.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

The first two were great. The third one was pretty good. The last one was meh.

I'm still excited to see what direction they take this

You're just on the wrong side of the river!

Seriously tho. Love that movie. And if someone doesn't like them... Don't be friends with them. That's my rule of thumb.

It was definitely mine as a teen lmao

[–] meejle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Mine was George of the Jungle but the reason is the same

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Downloading now! Just realized my wife hasn't seen this and needed a movie for tonight.

On one hand, this is cool. On the other, can Brendan still do any action scenes at this point? I’m guessing there will be a younger cast and they are banking on them taking on the mantle for sequels. Fraser and Weisz will have supporting roles and will primarily be used to draw audiences.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

It’s not just the action scenes but Fraser was perfectly cast and played the role well as young “swashbuckler” or whatever you want to call that trope. Does he still fit that role? Will they write the role differently?

Just because Harrison Ford could play “young swashbuckler adventurer” well past the age most of us retire, doesn’t mean anyone else can

[–] phx@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

The action scenes were cool but really it was the setting and humorthat made the mummy for me. So long as he can still act I'm happy

Beni: Hey, O'Connell! Looks to me like I've got all the horses.

Rick: Hey, Beni! Looks to me like you're on the wrong side of the river.

You say this knowing full well that Harrison's still shambling out Indiana Jones flicks. 🤣

late edit: also, each of them (Weisz & Fraser, not Ford) are genuinely pleasant, unpretentious heart-throbs. 🥹🥰 Hell, I'm willing to bet they both totally hang out w/ Keanu on the reg, by that merit alone.

[–] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Man that last one was so painful to watch ...

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 6 days ago

Not for me! 🤪 I avoided it like the tired-AF-writeoff that it is. 🤌🏼

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

With CGI, anything is possible. Just sayin'.

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 20 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Nice! Just this morning I was thinking, "what are some movies that 90s kids loved, that gen Z might have missed?" The Mummy was one of the first ones I thought of.

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 3 points 6 days ago

Definitely! I would say pretty much anything with Jim Carrey in it. He was like a genre of comedy movies on his own. The Mask and Ace Ventura certainly belong on the list; Liar Liar and Dumb and Dumber, too.

[–] jqubed@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Mask of Zorro was one I thought of recently

[–] ThePyroPython@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

"Do you even know how to use that thing?" 🤨

"Yes.... The pointy end goes in the other man." 🤷‍♂️

The Anaconda “reboot” looks like a ton of fun

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've been burned too many times looking forward to sequels and revisiting franchises to work well. But here's hoping for both their sakes and the spirit of the original that it does well. Such a good movie.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The last one, with Maria Bello, had a different tone to it. I hope, when they go back to the old cast, they can recapture a similar feel.

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

The last one had no soul without Weisz. Only the first 2 count for me, so no trilogy lol
