Why is Paul Denton like 50 years old in the remaster cat-confused

[–] TheLastHero@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

MJ12 must have forgotten to take him out of the tank and he overcooked

[–] RandallThymes@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hey so what if we added lighting to the game. Not with any specific art direction in mind, just add lighting.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

This is how all remasters do it. I swear there's some class every game studio puts their artists through since like 2010 that says "more light is better, end of story" and they execute anyone who dares make a dark scene

[–] Satanic_Mills@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Can we swap them with the modern movie lighting guys?

I mean, he is actually in his 50s in Deus Ex.

Storage 20 GB available space

The original Deus Ex ran on HDDs that had less total storage space than that.

[–] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 28 points 1 month ago (9 children)

It looks like absolute shit.

Hot take: Games this old should not be remastered, it doesn't go well. If you want to play a piece of gaming history, you should experience it as it was, graphics and all.

Once this shit comes out, the biggest impact it will have is to muddy the waters as to what someone means when they say they played Deus Ex. Did they play the original and presumably had to jump through some hoops to get it running, or did they play this abomination that is probably tons worse and obviously tons less optimized? Who knows.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

I think this is more a really bad remastering than proof that remastering an old game can't work, though "remaster" has always seemed like kind of a fuzzy category to me anyway, this case especially (it looks like an atrocious remake to me).

[–] Satanic_Mills@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I greatly enjoyed the System Shock (1) remake. All the atmosphere and none of the 90s jank.

[–] Redcuban1959@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

Tbh, THe original System Shock is barely a fps game, it's like a weird first person point and clicker

[–] Ithorian@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

The Dark Forces remaster a few years ago was good.

[–] gaycomputeruser@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

There's a remaster mod that is quite good. It definitely can be done.

i bet you could mod the OG game and make it look better

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

I bet you could make the OG game from memory on the PS1 and make it look better

[–] dkr567@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

It's also being remastered by Aspyr which to me = fuck that shit, sticking with the original with patches.

[–] doublepepperoni@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

I haven't played them but the Tomb Raider remasters they did seem pretty cool to me. The choice to update the character models to how they looked in PS1-era promotional renders is a neat idea

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

It's amazing because it looks like an Unreal Engine indie game for PS4, but even those would probably be more optimized

[–] Meltyheartlove@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Some of the older games on pc especially deus ex makes me extremely nauseous. 10 minutes is all I can handle before feeling as if I am going to pass out and that is after whatever tweaking I did. Never had the problem when I was still a kid but I played on a crt monitor. I don't really get motion sickness unless I try to read books on a bus and it doesn't even happen on a train but some games like deus ex are just unplayable because of this. doggirl-tears

[–] PostingInternational@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Try increasing Field of View in game. Bigger monitor and resolution help. Put monitor further away from you. Disable all head bobbing and shaking effects.

Regarding reading on trains, planes etc. For some reason, eating regular (so gluten) dough pizza before travel, allows me to literally read under turbulence on a plane. Otherwise, I would be puking my guts out. Don’t know why, but it works better than any pill.

I did all that but it doesn't go away plus stuff like vsync and fps limiter. low fov doesn't really bother me but headbob does sometimes.

I am more likely to feel nauseous on an empty stomach too but It doesn't change the outcome for me on cars/buses because it is overpowering but it probably helps me recover faster. Reading on trains is no issue at all though. It's just a thing with certain games from the 90s/ early 00s and it happened on the old simcity too so it was not just fps games but on the other hand something like quake or unreal tournament does not make me feel sick. I guess I could try eating something filling with gluten and trying deus ex again.

Why is it that when they "remaster" old as shit games, they always end up eating up way more storage space, requiring top of the line graphics, and all that to look worse? (Well, I like the Khajiits in the Oblivion remaster, but I just really like anthro kitties no matter how they're drawn. The Argonians look less boopable in the remaster.) Not to mention requiring much newer everything than the original. Not everyone's got a brand new computer, you guys! Especially people still playing really old games!

Them's the best! Hug shaped! (Also, I love how I look in cat ears. Specifically tiger ears. I make a cute Tigger.)

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Daaamn you made me look up the khajit because I hadn't seen them and you're right they look really good.

This almost got me to play the remaster but then I realised the modding community for it is dead as fuck because the mixture of UE and Gamebryo made it too difficult to mod and people don't care enough about it to learn or push through the barriers.

Think I'll pass. But those khajit do look good.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yep. The khajiit look a lot like ESO humanoid khajiit, which are... certainly more "anime catgirl/catboy" than older ES khajiit models. But, the fur isn't as detailed, and I like my bipedal kitties made of fluffy, lol.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They look like they just said "fuck it let's lean into the furries".

Why

Would you be learn that it's the profit motive? Make some dogshit game that coasts on nostalgia, don't give enough time to artists or programmers because quarterly profit, and maybe depending on who's publishing and what the deal is, use the whole thing to help push new consoles (and besides, making things more broadly compatible means more time and money spent)

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Khajiits in the Oblivion remaster

i did dislike the mane that they're all given, thankfully you could mod that out fubuki-heh

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Wait they all have to have manes in the remaster? But a lot of khajiit shave their manes to show reverence for their spiritual leader!

Being a lore nerd is nothing but pain and suffering.

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

im not sure if it's a mane but eh

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Pretty sure if it's long enough to braid you'd count that as a mane haha

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

yea well you can choose between being a jungle cat or a desert cat atleast ugh bethesda please why did you make 12 different furstocks in lore if you're going to give us the same cathay every time??

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (3 children)

theory-gary Actually in Morrowind we see the suthay-raht, who are unique in being digitigrades so they can't use normal shoes. In Arena and Daggerfall we see the ohmes and ohmes-raht furstocks, known for being so elf-like that they tend to tattoo themselves to avoid any chance of being mistaken for elves.

And then in ESO we see a whole bunch of different furstocks, because ESO is incredible.

But yeah I agree, I think there should be a lot of options for Khajiit characters. Especially NPCs, there should be a couple of every furstock to be found in every game IMO. Yeah, not many alfiq would want to travel and have to deal with foreigners who would treat them like housecats, but there would be a few, especially traveling among other Khajiit. Especially when we keep in mind that even two cathay can make an alfiq child (or any other furstock), so families should look very diverse when we see them.

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

ESO is pretty fun this is true, you also have a butt slider in that game. anya-heh

There's a couple of mods for Morrowind that allow you to play as most of the furstock and the Tamriel Rebuilt stuff (Cyrodil and Skyrim too) use a lot more varied forms of khajiit, so that's something.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Ooh, I'll have to look into that. I'm not super into ES lore but I love playing Khajiits. They're just so hug shaped and I love them. Plus, "punch kitty" is a damned funny melee build, and the whole "sneaks and thieves" thing and "cat burglar" means that stealth builds are lore justified as a Khajiit, lol.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

There's a pretty significant side of Elsweyr's culture that basically says "if you let me steal from you that's a skill issue" and successful theft/burglary is a sign of cleverness and boldness. They've even got a god about it, Rajhin.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Yeah, tbh that sounds about right for cats. I have absolutely dealt with cats that probably believe that.

[–] GenderIsOpSec@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Some of the most fun I've had is just playing as a uh...cathay-raht in Morrowind. Just wearing heavy armour and putting a massive hammer into the skull of every slave owner fash-bash

this is to turn a lot of the vanilla khajiit into the new forms

and this is to allow you to play as them

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

Ooh. That looks very fun. Fuzzy kitties!

Why didn't they just let nightdive handle it? catgirl-huh

[–] Shinji_Ikari@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

If we're being honest here, it's probably not the games requirements but the requirements to run modem windows.

Why re-release the game for Windows XP when the main issue with playing old games is compatibility with modern systems.

If you want the game to run on a pregnancy test, go download the original.

[–] WittyProfileName2@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

That screenshot has the distinctive look of one of those ID tech 4 FPSs. Man's got that Prey (2006) lighting. All that time and resources, and the tech needed to run it, just to make it look like a quake 4 mod.
