Mildly Interesting

This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

The word onomatopoeia is an onomatopoeia because it's derived from the sound of the word when spoken aloud

- Ken M.

Here's the opposite:

The work calque is a loanword, and the word loanword is a calque

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

Nice calque, bro

Sesquipedalian is autological because sesquipedalian means 'having many syllables or using long, complex words.'

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

How would one pronounce that word?

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

sess - kwih - peh - dale - ian

[–] vithigar@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

Been one of my favorite words for a long time.

[–] msfroh@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago

Huh... I had always assumed that it related to having one and a half feet/legs.

Is the word "heterological" homological or heterological?

If it is heterological, then it must be homological.

If it is homological, then it must be heterological.

Don't worry, I wrote a program that can find the answer for you. It's been running for a while though...

Maybe somebody could come up with a program to determine if my program will halt or continue forever?

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

The answer is 42.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

What are you trying to do, kill robots?

[–] blujan@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

None, we assumed the classification was binary, but these words are called Grellingian Words

[–] lolola@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 2 months ago

logophiles when they see the word "fuckable"

[–] topherclay@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (3 children)

This is a setup for someone to ponder if the word "nonautological" is an autological word or not.

It is a one word encapsulation of the same paradox created by the phrase "this sentence is false."

[–] dysprosium@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

So if it isn't, does that mean nonautological is nonautological? Which makes it autological again?

[–] spicehoarder@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

"I'm going to go ahead and say that's true" - Wheatley

[–] blujan@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

It would be a Grellingian Word

[–] Little8Lost@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Are names of colors also autological words if they are written in their own color?

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

I don't think so, but try writing it in a color different than the color of the word to really mess with people's head.
