As a brown Indigenous person .... it doesn't affect me because I've spent my life feeling this way about the world in Canada and the US. They're great places ... if you are white but disturbing, unsettling and sometimes even dangerous if you are any other colour. And it's been like that all my life.

As someone who's white-passing and was trained from an early age to be polite and quiet, I've always known there's a great deal of racism hiding beneath the public facades of many people. But fuck's sake. The past ten years have been devastating for my general faith in humanity.

When you start life by seeing it from the very bottom and at its worst ... nothing ever disappoints you because you always saw it for what it was and is.

I have no words of wisdom for it all .... just a profound acceptance that the world has always been like this

I'm half Jewish, so white, and able to fly under the radar very easily. I've always known there were evil and bigoted people in the world, but what is really knocking me down is watching my own damned family go down that rabbit hole. The non Jewish side are turning into hard core maple MAGA I'm sitting here thinking "What the fuck?? Were they always like this?? Were all the positive experiences with them growing up just an illusion??" These people would literally have turned me in to the Nazi regime in 1930s Germany. Realizing that half of everyone around me are like this just makes me want to quit living.

I'm all the Jewish and am drowning in family who can identify with Nazis. I've made documentaries for my family about those who we lost and found due to the Holocaust. But here we fucking are.

Sorry you're going through that.

Sam Nordquist was tortured for about a month before he was murdered. I’m sure he would have preferred a more quick shot in the neck.

They didn’t bother with hate crime charges, despite the fact that he was clearly targeted as a transgender man. Did he get the flag at half mast? I’m sure he was a much kinder man than Charlie Kirk.

[–] Knoxvomica@lemmy.ca 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What the FUCK. How have I heard nothing about this?! Holy shit.

[–] andros_rex@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

The media landscape minimized it and deemphasized him as a human being. Lots of outlets wouldn’t even call him a man.

A straight white Nazi is someone who matters. A biracial trans man doesn’t.

Related - some day I hope people will fucking realize that the Oklahoma state government lies through its teeth and Nex Benedict was murdered, with his death covered up by Owasso state police.

Theres this guy who makes freakin cat remix songs called the Kiffness and it turns out he's a Nazi Sympathizer, too.

[–] squaresinger@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago

Oh no, that one too?

Well, another one to avoid.

Really? He did that lovely video with the one two shake guy..

EDIT: Just looked it up, he is an asshole indeed. Such tragedy.

Extra edit: These days it is like learning santa claus is not real, on a daily basis. Hard times..

That was really shitty watching him use the word "moderate" that way.

Spoiled white dude in South Africa turns out to be awful - surprise surprise?

[–] atomicorange@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

He could have just kept his damn mouth shut about it. I was nauseated watching that video.

Good people are out there, but you need to take this moment to recognize the social bubble you may be in and find new bubbles.

Use this also as a useful filter to sort dumb people from good people, and to recalibrate your own ability to size people up.

Ain't my social circle I'm disappointed in. I trimmed that a long time ago.

Is this about Newsom? I feel like it's about Newsom? Newsom did that.

[–] PugJesus@piefed.social 26 points 3 days ago

For me it's about people in general, but I have no doubt that Newsom, as a neoliberal ghoul, is disappointing along these lines.

[–] markovs_gun@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

It just makes me sad. Half these people didn't know who this guy was a week ago and have only seen a very sanitized version of him after his horrific assassination. If I didn't know who this guy was beforehand and only knew him from the clips and coverage seen after his death I would probably also think "huh someone killed this guy for that?" Nevermind that he devoted his entire life to laundering fascist ideology to college students and they're not seeing all of the pretty awful things he's said through the years. And of course you can't post "Hey before lauding this guy as a hero maybe check out what he actually believed in" because that makes it seem like you think it was good he got shot or think he "had it coming." It's just frustrating because emotions are high and people are backing into camps because they feel scared and like they are under attack because they have successfully allowed themselves to be put on the same team as this guy in spite of not being nearly as extreme. But the problem is that all of this fear and anger can easily be redirected into more hatred, and there are many people trying to do just that.

I never compromised (I think I'm just too sensitive for it, honestly), but I don't mind "suffering fools" and telling them, kindly, how wrong they are and how shameful it is to take whatever position/action they've taken, and to please reconsider. If after a while they don't stop, then I just cut our links, even if it's blood that unites us. I can't be associated with someone whose actions and thoughts I simply cannot condone (although I'm pretty accommodating and won't judge folks for stuff others would, usually for superficial reasons). It's important to remember many people aren't immoral by conviction and deep thought but by propaganda and lack of thought, and sometimes just nudging them into the right direction is enough to make them think about things, finally. They're not villains, they're just intellectually incompetent, and just like a taller person might help me reach things on the top of the cupboard, so must those who know better guide those who don't...

oh yeah, ordinary nice people suck. weird people, those folk are actually cool and kind.
