Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

When the freeze peach government has a "not using freeze peach" condition to do business with you.

“You’re under arrest for not consuming product enough!”

Bro, I’m poor. What do you want? Want product to be consumed? Take it up with porky.

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

pick up that can! ... of sabra... and eat it

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 2 points 7 months ago

MFW "We got you surrounded, come drink your corn syrup!" is going to be more than a meme.

Turns out 'the globalists' have been based and redpilled this whole time.

What's a non-politically motivated boycott?

[–] Hermes@hexbear.net 27 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Boycotting Türkiye because you don't want to learn to type ü

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 10 points 7 months ago

It's still Turkey to me

[–] omegathrowaway@lemmy.ml 3 points 7 months ago

writing Türkiye iş hard case my autocorrect becomes Turkish right after

[–] mendiCAN@hexbear.net 15 points 7 months ago

I've been boycotting sabra for years because it's fucking mid

[–] QuillcrestFalconer@hexbear.net 45 points 7 months ago

Just say it's your religion that forces you to boycott Israel then

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

I don't think being opposed as genocide is political as much as human.

I love how they're talking out of one side of their mouth with "Charlie Kirk was just trying to protect free speech uwu" and out of the other side of their mouth with "also if you criticize Israel even in the slightest we will come down on you like the hammer of Thor" like how fucking dumb are burgerlanders for putting up with this shit

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 13 points 7 months ago

You say this as if we have a choice lol

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 2 points 7 months ago

You will believe what the internet tells you without question. Now repeat after me "I am a free-thinker!"

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 23 points 7 months ago (3 children)

How does this hold up constitutionally?

It will be ever so slightly funny to see SCOTUS say that buying EPYC instead of Xeon for a data centre is antisemitic hate speech

[–] Euergetes@hexbear.net 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

it's the same as the state anti-bds laws so it won't be challenged

and it's hard to imagine it even being applied, imagine a firm that does contracts for the fucking Pentagon which supports BDS? that can't be a real company.

[–] reverendz@lemmygrad.ml 2 points 7 months ago

They are past giving a shit or even pretending to give a shit.

The Supreme Kangaroo Court will pretzel logic any damn thing Droopy Don wants.

[–] reddit@hexbear.net 17 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Obviously bad but god I'm sick of bullshit headlines. Makes it sound like we're one Senate vote away from banning it entirely, get scared enough to click in, turns out it's actually just that federal contractors can't protest Israel now

[–] limer@lemmy.ml 22 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

1/3 of the USA economy depends on the contracts; including the majority of USA colleges and universities. Over half the population indirectly provides services to these contractors.

It is not impossible to make it later a condition that defense contractors cannot do business with boycotting companies. That would effectively end the movement in the USA

[–] dragongloss@hexbear.net 14 points 7 months ago

Your honor, It was not politically motivated when I was boycotting Israel, I just don't like Sabra hummus. It was entirely coincidental that did not purchase any Israeli products over a long period of time.

[–] hellinkilla@hexbear.net 6 points 7 months ago

If only Israel made anything useful I could boycott them. :(

[–] communism@lemmy.ml 5 points 7 months ago

Don't worry, I'm only doing an apolitical boycott.
