Fucking love The Gizz!

I love Gizz. Polygondwanaland is my favorite, followed closely by Infest the Rats' Nest. If you didn't know it you'd think each album is from a totally different band.

Alright, I've passively listened to one or two albums before, but not really dived in. With such a large and eclectic discography, what are some recommended starting points?

[–] Aqarius@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Hard to say. They pump out music like mad, and every album can be an entirely different genre.

My personal favourite is Polygondwanaland, though.

Depends on your style. Most albums try completely different genres, so if you like one genre more, you may want to start with those albums.

Depends on what you prefer, given they often have very different sounds because all of the members wrote the songs and some of the albums will be mostly written by one member. For a sample of everything, try Gumboot soup or Omnium Gatherium, those are the albums where they put songs they didn't have an individual album for. That being said, I rather like Flight 741 (it's a collaboration album, all of the 7 members wrote 4 one), Changes (very good technically amazing jazz), Sketches of Brunswick East (also jazzy and really good), and Petrodraconic apocalypse (heavy metal with a tinge of psychedelia). To be honest though, there is standout music from each album, so just start with one that you like a song from.

Haven’t touched the spot app in years but I imagine fizz gizz wizz thanks autocorrect can put out three more albums next week to make up for it

Weirdo swarm unite!

Our favorite brewery in Calgary introduced us to them, and they are amazing!

Good on them

Didn’t know they were NYP. My friend group has a thing where someone picks an album that we all sit with for a week and then write a review. That’s where I first heard PetroDragonic Apocalypse. Once I switched to Bandcamp full time this year and saw they were on there that was the second album I ever bought. The first was Shovel Night nearly a decade ago.

Infest the Rat's Nest and Chunky Shrapnel are "name your price" now, too! They were still full price for a while - I think it had something to do with those albums being released through ATO.

If there's anyone here who's never listened to Gizz and has no idea where to start, there's tons of "beginner's guides" out there. Here's a good one though it hasn't been updated since they pulled their music from Spotify: https://www.getintogizz.com/ There's also lots of concerts on Youtube. All of the KEXP sessions are great!

This hasn't been updated in a couple years, but someone made a flowchart:

Here's a readable link!

Music guides were the saving grace of the cesspit that is 4chan. I miss that era back before it went from the ultimate RNG site to a place that is reliably only full of the worst kinds of people

Thank you! TIL they exist and I am loving what I'm hearing. I will definitely use this chart

It's pretty overwhelming at first, but they're such a great band with a ton of material. They did 3 nights of live sets on YouTube a few weeks ago and you should absolutely see what they're like live. Again, 9 hours of live, original music is a bit overwhelming, but it's so good! Happy listening!
