We live in the UK. She didn't go any further than this. I got her to download TOR and use the "old.Reddit" trick to bypass this so it was only mildly infuriating for her in the end

Because Lemmy is mostly just a political soapbox, there's not enough actual non-political content.

I love it here but you gotta admit its like 50/50 politics and programming. It's just like old old reddit

I want the Reddit from 5 years ago

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Would you rather have a place where you can't talk about it or else you get banned and any dissent is killed and banned and it's slowly getting worse day by day?

Or a foss freedom free structure platform where people can ACTUALLY talk about what's on their mind? Hmmmm?

Sounds like you have some privileges you maybe need to realize you have.

[–] fushuan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

No you don't understand, they didn't say they weren't on Lemmy, they are as you clearly noticed. So they do have access to all the political discourse they want when they want it.

They said that Lemmy is too politically dominated and that some communities only live on Reddit rn.

I kinda agree, I use Lemmy 99% of the time but when a new Poe league releases the poebuildsdiscussion has interesting information about the game, not having political discourse in that community is irrelevant since that's now what's about. I'd prefer if it was here but there clearly is no interest, as a transition was attempted with the API exodus and it failed.

Reading a discussion thread about some obscure TV show that there is no communify for on Lemmy is... "privilage"?

Christ. Stop using fucking reddit already

[–] some_random_nick@lemmy.world 37 points 3 weeks ago

We would love to, if not for the accumulated knowledge which can't be (easily) found elsewhere.

[–] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 3 weeks ago

To be fair it's about the new UK nanny dictatorship law.

In theory lemmy should do the same and the UK government could sue and block access of any lemmy instance not following their ludicrous laws.

Reddit needs a better tagging system than just NSFW. It was pointless having a filter when you don't subscribe to any porn subreddits and all the ones you are subscribed to don't allow porn in the first place. It's only natural people started using NSFW for other things, most notably spoilers, which I believe they've added in recent years. If you had the filter enabled, you ended up missing out on content.

[–] OboTheHobo@ttrpg.network 18 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

It does need better tagging but honestly thats not the issue here. This is because of the new UK law, simple as.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

Also some shitty Republican states in the US.

“Estimate age from selfie”?! Wtf have we become…

When I was 14, I looked like I was 20. When I was 20, I looked like I was 35. When I was 35, I looked like I was 50. You can’t determine someone’s actual age from a fucking photo. Jesus.

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 23 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Am 45. Constantly get told by 20 somethings that I look 26-28. I still get carded.....

[–] Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world 16 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] WolfLink@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

My 25 year old SO got carded while my 19 year old brother wasn’t questioned when we were at a liquor store. I think because my brother had a big beard they assumed he must be old lol.

When I was working at a local supermarket, we had the instructions to explicitly ask anyone for ID that we deemed 40 or younger, when they tried to buy tobacco or alcohol. For that exact reason.

[–] livejamie@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 weeks ago

Reddit doesn't really care; they're going to do the bare minimum legally so they can feed more ads and get more clicks.

[–] B0rax@feddit.org 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Just send them a random selfie from the internet, no?

[–] jnod4@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago

You nees to do a video looking left, right, saying some numbers. The companies that do the verification are owned by Peter thiell and co

Can’t have kids looking at teeth! Next thing you know, they’ll want to become, forgive me for this, dentists.

[–] frenchfryenjoyer@lemmings.world 10 points 3 weeks ago

That's a cavity in the law right there. Guess they don't want us to brace ourselves for the harsh realities of molars online 😂

Rofl what a piece of piss website

[–] AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 21 points 3 weeks ago (9 children)

Fun fact: I can't see the screenshot as I'm in the UK and your instance has taken the maximally paranoid literal meaning of the OSA and blocked access just in case anything's accidentally not flagged as NSFW.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 12 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The idiots here are your lawmakers and their supporters.

Them people won't get hung on a technicality. You have to be nuts not to be paranoid these days.

Reddit isn't worth it any more IMO, It's all just downvoting and moaning over everything. Yes that happens here but at least people seem to talk more.

This sounds more like a "fuck UK age restriction laws" not reddit.

The UK's age restriction laws online are now enforced under the Online Safety Act (OSA), which requires online platforms to verify the age of users before they access categories of "harmful" content, including pornography and content related to self-harm or eating disorders. Websites, apps, and services hosting such content must implement robust age checks, with platforms facing significant fines or blocking if they fail to comply. Methods for age verification can include facial age estimation, ID scanning, or credit card checks.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You could use redlib.catsarch.com or redlib.lesbnyan.top

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 9 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

lesbnyan.top

I don't understand fancy tech lingo and that sounds vaguely kinky.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

It is.

It's a portmanteau of lesbian and nyan.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (3 children)

Wow and you just taught me the definition of "portmanteau" in context too. I never really knew what that word meant but it sounds like a big fancy wooden piece of furniture.
