Our landlady posts a bunch of "don't put me in a nursing home" content and I'm lowkey trying to get her kids to put her in a nursing home. Finally moving out of this fucking place in a couple of weeks. Never rent a place where the owner lives next door, it's a nightmare. I prefer the faceless corporations.
Anyway, this made me think of the kind of shit she posts.
Found the one Garfield hater
I need to get started on my magnum opus again, cataloguing Jim Davis' Forgotten Era. There is a lot of good research to be done about the period from 1982-1996 where he suffered a nervous breakdown from his success and delved deep into his Catholic faith, pledging to atone for Garfield's sins by drawing one depiction of him as Christ for every day since the crucifixion. The more he invested in this project and suffered the personal consequences, the more he was unable to distinguish between himself, Garfield, and the trials of Jesus. Financially ruined and unmoored from reality, he eventually even ran out of paper in his attempt to make the 710,108 Forgotten Era Comics (though expanded indefinitely after 9 January, 1982 as his intellectual mortification intensified). Over 13,500 of them are akin to cave paintings done with bodily fluids, all depicting a naked Jim Davis crucifying a naked Jim Davis while a naked Jim Davis cries at his feet. It's only been 29 years since and the public pretends it didn't happen, to say nothing of the legal and PR efforts by Davis to bury it. It did though.
The ultimate meaning lies in participation (typing “I love Garfield amen”) or in resistance (ignoring). Is devotion to Garfield a true act of love, or merely algorithmic compliance to social media imperatives? Conversely, is ignoring the post an authentic exercise of freedom, or just another predictable refusal in the endless cycle of memes?
Ultimately, it is a philosophical paradox: To type “I love Garfield amen” is to submit, but to ignore is also to play your role exactly as foretold. In both cases, Garfield wins.
Truly a Garfield's Basilisk of a comment
