Trump says the U.S. has carried out a strike in the southern Caribbean against a drug-carrying vessel that departed from Venezuela.

The president on Tuesday offered scant details on the operation.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on X that the vessel was being operated by a “designated narco-terrorist organization.”

The press office of Venezuela’s government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the announcement.

Reform of the US Army: The Infantry Brain Drain

The US Army's "line" infantry units are in practice fourth-rate formations that have been systematically stripped of talented personnel. How is this? Well, it's quite simple - there are multiple "tiers" (literally called that) of elite infantry or special forces units in the US Army that draw their personnel from the same pool of personnel that populates the Army's infantry line. Getting into one of these units - the Rangers, the Green Berets, the constellation of spooky black ops units "above" normal SF - is a massive prestige boost and career enhancer for soldiers. Even a Ranger scroll - let alone a green beret - opens doors for Army and post-service civilian careers that a blue cord simply does not. Ambitious and talented soldiers - predominantly infantrymen - are thus aggressively sucked into a small, concentrated pool of elite troops and out of the line units that provide the foundation of the US Army's combat power.

How much of an effect does this have on the Army's line infantry? Let's run the numbers: The US Army currently has 32 active-duty brigade combat teams, where the large majority of the Army's infantry force resides. Between them (and assuming they're at full strength with thousand-strong, going-to-Afghanistan light and Stryker infantry battalions, which is a huge stretch these days) the force has approximately 74,000 infantrymen on strength in line units. The US Army also maintains the 75th Ranger Regiment, 1st Special Forces Command, and feeds into a number of black ops units. This amounts to something on the order of:

• 2,000 "scrolled" Ranger infantry in the Ranger Regiment
• 4,000 Green Berets in the five active-duty Groups and elsewhere in SOCOM
• 1,000 operators in spooky units

This is a total of 7,000 personnel - representing the best 10% of the US Army's total dismounted combat force - concentrated into elite units. The effect that removing such a large number of high-performing personnel from line units will have on the residual effectiveness of those line units is obvious. It's tantamount to the removal of a badass, aggressive, high-performing leader from every line infantry squad in the Army. Anyone with even a little familiarity with the military will know immediately what kind of effect that has. The utility that the Army gets out of this vast SOF enterprise does not compensate for the damage that's done to line units to create it. Ranger missions are duplicative of the regular light infantry. The Green Berets have a track record of 60 years of consistent failure to accomplish their core mission of training effective local irregular forces. And the spooky guys were infamous for rampaging into line unit AOs during the late war and undoing months or years of careful counterinsurgency work to get random mid-level bad guy scalps.

So what's to be done about this? Easy - prune SOCOM with a chainsaw and watch the regular infantry rise to the challenge.

Venezuela's Minister of Communication and Information, Freddy Ñáñez, claims that a video presented by the United States to report an attack on a boat off the Venezuelan coast was created by artificial intelligence. The US government said it carried out the attack on criminals.

The destruction of the boat was announced yesterday evening (September 2) in the Oval Office by US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who posted a video on social media as “proof” of the offensive. “In the last few minutes, we have literally just destroyed a boat loaded with drugs. There were a lot of drugs on that boat. That boat left Venezuela, a lot of stuff is leaving Venezuela. So we destroyed it, and you'll see that as soon as this meeting is over,” Trump said.

According to Ñáñez, when the video images were submitted to Gemini, the AI pointed to strong evidence that it had been generated by artificial intelligence (AI). “It seems that Marco Rubio continues to lie to his president: after putting him in a dead end, he now gives him as ‘proof’ a video with AI (as proven). What does Gemini say about this video?” said the Venezuelan minister.

A report by state-owned VTV presents Gemini's full response, which was also published on social media by the minister. According to AI, the material contains several signs of digital manipulation. Among them, an explosion considered simplified and unrealistic, water and motion effects that reveal artificial textures, as well as the presence of overlapping elements, such as the text “UNCLASSIFIED” and a watermark with no identified origin.

“These elements, along with the lack of detail, are common in AI-generated content,” says Gemini, pointing out that the video could be a deepfake or synthetic content, which is increasingly used in disinformation campaigns, entertainment, and even artistic expressions. “Marco Rubio is encouraging war and trying to stain President Donald Trump's hands with blood,” said the Venezuelan minister, condemning the use of such resources to justify narratives of war.

WASHINGTON, Sept 5 (Reuters) - The U.S. has ordered the deployment of 10 F-35 fighter jets to a Puerto Rico airfield to conduct operations against drug cartels, two sources briefed on the matter said, in a move likely to further inflame tensions in the region.

Field modifications are basically just "toss whatever you can find on the tank, weld it all together and call it a day". I'm not entirely sure these tanks are meant for frontline combat, first because they're old unless we're talking about "T-62M Obr. 2022" (They have some upgrades to their FCS and thermals), which doesn't make them as useful as, say, a T-72B3, but you can use it on secondary fronts or whatever. Either way, most of the T-55s and T-62s in service with the Russian Army are used as makeshift artillery, as the Russians have a shitton of 100mm and 115mm shells in storage and the main guns of said vehicles can be used for indirect fire so, why not use them?

A number of those were used as VBIED drones too, heavily protected to sustain a number of drone attacks and also filled with explosives so that it may drive to an Ukrainian position and blow itself up. A bunch of older generation of T-72s were also used this way.
