I work with a British guy and two people from two different African countries (don't want to mention where because I'm concerned about doxxing myself more than I already usually do), and when we started talking about corruption in Middle Eastern and African countries and I brought up how similar problems also exist in (Western) Europe, he said that when it happens in Europe it breaks the law and that they have standards against it in Europe, but one of the two African guys tried to be reasonable with him and was saying it's against the law and against acceptable standards everywhere, that corruption isn't taken as acceptable or legal anywhere. The British guy just kind nodded along, but he's only honest regarding his views with myself, with our colleagues he'd prefer to be polite and 'diplomatic'.

I should also mention he's black (will be relevant soon) and he's not overly fond of the Middle Eastern country we're working in; why I hear you ask? Racism? Nope. Mistreatment by the police? Nope, in fact quite the opposite: he's had fantastic dealings with cops who nudge nudge wink wink 'Oh, you just didn't see the no U-turn sign there, so that's okay then; wouldn't be fair to write you a ticket' nudge nudge wink wink. So what exactly is it then? Well, he's (without using those exact words) a 'West is best' type person. Never mind that back in the UK he's faced what he's called 'colorful language', something he's never once faced here, instead he detests that Qatar isn't a democracy and that they don't plan on behaving like Westerners any time soon. Yes, despite the people here being happy with their lives in a monarchy, he's upset about it. One of the things he's scoffed at is the idea of buying milk or eggs here because he's convinced people here must absolutely be using growth hormones/steroids/whatever with the livestock; is it based on anything he's read? No; he just believes it's impossible to have standards outside Western countries, because again, 'West is best' but not in those exact words. Should've asked him how that fantastic British standard gave them the mad cow disease.

EDIT: I realize I went on a bit of a tangential rant, but working in the Middle East with other people from Western countries made me realize I'm glad I don't think like this, and that there are people not only this close minded out there, but who even when they come here and see things for themselves, nothing's going to change their minds. For people like this, going to China wouldn't change their views.
