Yeah, everyone should stop using Instagram, Facebook, threads, reddit, tik tok. But the FOMO is too strong. It's too bad, if they did it would fix most of their problems in like a week.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 56 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Exactly.

Okay, now do religion.

[–] cannon_annon88@lemmy.today 29 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Everyone should stop going to churches, synagogues, mosques, the church of latter day saints, and scientology. But the FOMO and fear of eternal damnation is too strong. It's too bad, if they could just realize that everything is god including themselves, they could live happier more fulfilling lives in like a week.

People don't really go to services for god or salvation, they do it for community.

[–] Rooty@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I stopped going to church because the community was composed of rank hypocrites and bigots. I can have communal spaces elsewhere.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago

I asked that before it started.

Here we are.

My wife is very progressive and believes in human rights. Her Facebook feed went conservative about a week ago now with constant right wing propaganda.

[–] BJ_and_the_bear@lemmy.world 50 points 1 week ago (9 children)

Big tech has gone full fascist for a bit now

FB has been normally Right wing propaganda arm for ru, for like a decade. i think they might have ramped it up. plus AI bots are probably running the site anyways.

It’s really disturbing seeing social media start leaning this way. It’s very obvious controlled fascist propaganda. Have you seen what Twitter is now? It’s actually creepy and insane.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago (4 children)

This is how everything works under capitalism.

"We use technology or a review team to identify content that should be covered," a notice obscuring the post reads. "This post doesn't go against our Community Standards, but may contain images that some people might find upsetting."

Yeah, I bet.

"What the f**k, Instagram?" a Bluesky user wrote.

k.

Facebook is a privately owned company that is responsible for their own actions.

[–] Ileftreddit@lemmy.world 40 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Meta is not your friend, despite how addicted to it everyone is

[–] Ileftreddit@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

In fact, it seems like all Info and Tech companies really hopped in line with Trump like fucking right away and I’m worried that not even that critical mass of 3-4% of the country is even able to protest, much less if that many people even want to

[–] tempest@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago

Companies don't have morals, if Trump disappeared tomorrow and was replaced with Bernie Sanders or whatever they would swap right back.

Did you all forget Insta is just Facebook for people under 65?

Same parent company. Same priorities. The same people pushing AI gen antarctic ice wall and horse dewormer content on your memaw are deciding what you see too.

All platforms are just becoming censorship hellholes for the owners.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 1 week ago (10 children)

You mean the app that's run by a fascist and that promotes genocide? I'm shocked. SHOCKER!!! \s

(Seriously use Pixelfed instead, even if only partially for support.)

Funny how such glitches never happen to nazi posts.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (7 children)

Something interesting to me is how the left takes these things on the chin. In these comments there are lots of comments like "yea well they all do this". Compare that to the right during covid who would take screenshots and make sure everybody knew this was happening and not only that it was happening but how this would lead to dystopian authoritarian rule that threaten each and every person. I see this over and over again with each and every opportunity to show people how bad things are getting. But instead we snuff out these things ourselves and just move along.

The left have no bite. They are all bark

Can we make this character be the face of leftists from now on. Because its most of you.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Compare that to the right during covid who would take screenshots

Be more specific. Do you mean how sites were taking down covid conspiracies that were getting people killed?

Also, these sites aren't free speech platforms. They're advertisement platforms. They should be burnt to the ground.

The dichotomy between the left and right on these kind of issues are probably more economic than anything else.

The people I know that freaked out about these sort of things were typically maga types. Lower income, lower education, and relied on social media for all kinds of news, human contact, and such.

Meanwhile most liberals and conservatives that didn’t, lived more comfortably with higher career and education levels. This isn’t even really a left wing vs right wing kind of thing. Even the conservatives I knew that had higher education and career accomplishment freaked less out about Covid and social media “censorship” too because they could just do without.

If you can live comfortably and it doesn’t affect your living, you tend to not rock the boat

[–] jerkface@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

They were getting whipped up and manipulated. A lot of that shit you are talking about was not organic. A lot of the shit you are talking about was pure paranoid mass delusion. A moral panic just like a classic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penis_panic. It's a feature of the left that such things DON'T spread the same way.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (6 children)

So what are you all going to do about it?

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 46 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Continue to not use Facebook/Instagram.

I switched to Lemmy when Reddit came out in support of people who abuse children. I don't even mean Trump, I just mean in general. I suggested abusers in general should face harsher penalties. They banned me for it. I said "holy shit you just did me a huge favor, apparently I was on the wrong site because our values are 100% incompatible."

I mean, there isn't even a debate. I'm not talking about people who find themselves attracted to kids. I'm talking about people who actually went out and hurt a real child facing longer, more meaningful sentences and they said nah, those people are people and need to be protected.

I've moved social networks on account of incompatible values and I think others will, too. Maybe not the majority but I think some others will. Especially as things get worse. There are networks for people who hate (like Truth Social), and networks for people who don't care (like Facebook/Insta/Whatsapp), but I think as things change, more people will care and will look elsewhere. Not everyone but some people.

[–] SwimmingInTheeStars@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I got banned for suggested someone stab a can with a knife to open it (they didn’t have a can opener). They said I was promoting violence. I appealed and a human still banned me for that. What a crock lol

Those who use Instagram will keep using it and forget all about this within 24 hours.
