Curious but why not Worms Armageddon? It's basically improved in almost every way
Just nostalgia more than anything else it was my introduction to worms but your probably right. Certainly anything with a more modern look and play style.

Worms 2 (and every Worms since, afaik) has online play.
I don't know, but there is a good clone available called Hedgewars
