In case you need more context, Matthew 6:5-6:

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Edit: Please remember that the bible is very internally inconsistent, and it's obviously not factual. It's just funny that the people who claim to be christians don't know their own book.

also more context? because it's a oft mentioned topic: Matthew 23:27-28 New International Version

27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

The book is very clear about these kinds of people.

Mathew 7:21-23

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them*, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

But if we read Matthew we won't be able to focus on the parts we really like in the books prohibiting shrimp and mixed fabrics

Any time Republicans do this shit, Democrats need to be in the side preaching this verse.

It's just funny that the people who claim to be christians don't know their own book.

This is by design. What is written is one thing, but what it “says” is whatever they want it to say.

Yeah its called "cafeteria christianity" - they pick and choose what parts to follow while ignoring the inconvenient verses that would actually require them to be decent humans.

"Verily I say to you, they have received their reward."

That's not a compliment, of course.

I'm no expert on this, but it definitely reads like "lol this is as good as it gets for these asshats. It's a one way road to eternal hellfire from here"

[–] Blaster_M@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

A bit more like 'they seek the approval of men, and thus that is their reward: the approval of men, no more.'

Indicating their prayers go unanswered.

I've always found it funny that the right invented the term "virtue signaling", in order to accuse liberals of spouting empty words to make themselves look good.

With conservatives, every accusation is a confession.

But only the poor children.

[–] henfredemars@infosec.pub 8 points 2 weeks ago

Again, their weird obsession with children.

Religion is cancer. You can't change my mind on this.

[–] iAvicenna@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Religion is a tool used by some humans that have turned cancerous. Real cancer is the humans.

not really the real cancer is the current capitalist and imperialist societies

[–] Rachelhazideas@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

People are cancer. Religion is product of people.

Being religious doesn't inherently make anyone a good or bad person, it just allows people to justify how they feel about themselves.

For perspective, to a devout Hindu, you are cruel and barbaric for eating factory farmed meat.

And give it to the billionaires
