Look, I’m probably considered a normie neoshitlib by hexbear standards. But 100% I wish, in the US, we’d drop this culture war bullshit and adopt class struggle instead. Even if I’m not personally ready to embrace full-on tankie Stalinism or whatever, I see the need for this.
Just simple stuff, like collective bargaining, should be back on the table in a big way. When productivity goes way up, but wages don’t increase at a similar clip, that’s a big problem. Nothing too radical here.
Like, the working-class people who live in the same red state I live in (and who are mostly Trumpy), most of them have, for example, never actually met a transgender person, and most likely never will. But all of them can benefit from an increased standard of living won by clawing back taxes from the 1% of the 1% of the super-duper wealthy. The fact that political talking heads who target these working class people focus on the former, and never the latter, says everything.
And, lo and behold, when material conditions improve and working-class people aren’t always teetering on the brink of poverty, they suddenly feel less shit-scared overall, and start feeling a little more liberal- and open-minded about these cultural issues. Imagine that.
It’s the economy, stupid.
