Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Snip:

In its report, published on Wednesday, Le Monde identified nearly 350 Ukrainian troops posting neo-Nazi imagery online, including Nazi salutes, swastika tattoos, Black Sun emblems, and Totenkopf insignias. According to the research, at least 200 of those identified serve in Kiev’s 3rd Assault Brigade.

[...]

Formed in 2023, the 3rd Assault Brigade is a direct successor of the Azov Regiment – originally created in 2014 by far-right figure, Andrei Biletsky. Azov has been accused by multiple human rights groups, as well as the UN, of war crimes and torture and has been widely criticized for its use of symbols tied to the Waffen-SS.

According to Le Monde, the 3rd Assault Brigade has received military training from several NATO countries, including France, Spain, Germany, the UK and Canada, who have also poured in billions in military support to Ukraine. The paper noted that some soldiers sent to France in 2023 bore visible SS tattoos. When questioned, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces stated that it was the responsibility of Ukraine to vet the personnel.

The report also stated that a number of foreign volunteers who have joined Ukraine’s forces, including French nationals, have affiliations with far-right groups. Some were shown posting Nazi tributes and displaying related tattoos online.

Gee, such coincidental timing. Right when NATO and the Western media cycle is moving on to the next war, Ukrainian Nazis suddenly make a comeback. Where were they after February 2022, Le Monde?

Link is broken and I can't find the source with search engines. Le Monde always had a rabid anti Russian stance. I saw one of their articles rewriting Bandera's history of antisemitism and collaboration with Germany so I'm a tat bit surprised that they would plainly admit that the UA is full of fascists

The link works for me, but it's an RT story and it doesn't link to the Le Monde report.

Interesting, I just clicked it again and it works fine for me.

Yeah it's because I live in a free country where RT has been made inaccessible, for freedom

i think it's maybe this, about azov as expected, not whole army, so title is kinda meh

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 8 points 10 months ago

Worth noting that Azov is now one (or two?) full corps of Ukraine's army.^[https://azovlobby.substack.com/p/how-we-learned-to-stop-worrying-and]

Do you live in a place where RT has been censored?

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 6 points 10 months ago

Ah right, that's it then, I don't have a VPN

[–] radio_free_asgarthr@hexbear.net 10 points 10 months ago

A) this is RT propaganda under the hood

B) I'm betting I could find quite a few US soldiers (plus the Secretary of Defense) who have prevalent Nazi symbology tattoos and/or post pro Nazi materials online.

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 18 points 10 months ago

A) If Le Monde is RT, NYT is Hamas

B) Yeah, the US military is full of disgusting fascists. Do you think that the leftist response to that fact is "Oh, well if the US military does it, that must mean it's cool for other people to do it too, because we believe the US military is a legitimate thing that should continue to exists and not be ripped to atoms"?

Of course, your equivalence isn't that strong when you consider that groups like Azov, which were full of open pogromists (see the origin of the "orc" meme) went from being an openly and doctrinally fash paramilitary to formally folded into the military, where their influence was allowed to spread and members were even tasked with doing things like representing Ukraine to the Greek parliament for some reason.

When some barrack-room boys' club has a picture leaked of them brandishing Swastikas in the US, there's a scandal and sometimes people are fired or there is at least some formal apology as a garbage cover-story is offered. In Ukraine, it's not a leak, it's every other picture that is high enough resolution to make out what that funny patch is (spoiler, it's a totenkopf or lightning bolts or something), or at least that had been true for some time into the war. Even their original logo that they partially rebranded from well into the war was more fascist iconography. But, like, what do you expect? Banderism is popular and has faced almost no challenge, down to that slogan, "slava ukra'ini!" which was another chestnut for OUN-B enjoyers passed right down from their father.

But let's say that it was just like the US military socially. Any leftist should conclude that it should also be like the US military in terms of the prescription: disassembled with prejudice. Bringing the US up here serves no purpose, unless you want to say that their destruction is more urgent because it would do more good for the world, where I would agree with you, but the Nazi symbology has very, very little to do with it.

"Under the hood" refers to the force behind something being hidden or unexpected, literally coming from the engine of a car being hidden from view underneath a large panel called a "hood", meaning it could be a different make or model than the one suggested by the car's exterior.

RT are not hiding their involvement with this article. It is hosted on their website with their branding, suggesting it is their writing. It's Le Monde propaganda under the hood, because Le Monde's article is what this one is based on.

Why am I explaining this? Becuase you are not very intelligent and should feel too embarrassed to share your half baked opinions.
