Or perhaps the end of the beginning, if you're a little more pessimistic.

Image is from this Bloomberg article, from which I also gathered some of the information used in the preamble.

While Trump was off in the Middle East in an incompetent attempt to solve a geopolitical and humanitarian crisis, China has been doing something much more productive.

Chinese officials, including Xi Jinping, had a summit with CELAC (a community of 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries). There, he promised investment, various declarations of friendship, and visa-free entry for 30 days for citizens of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Uruguay. Lula signed over 30 agreements with China. Colombia is joining the New Development Bank and hopes to gain the money for a 120-kilometer railway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as an alternative route to the Panama Canal. Even Argentina, ruled by arch-libertarian and arch-dipshit (but I repeat myself) Milei, was uncharacteristically polite with China as he secured a currency swap renewal to shore up their international reserves.

It wouldn't really be correct to say that Latin America is "siding with China over the US" - leaders in the region will continue to make many deals with America for the foreseeable future, and even Trump's bizarre economic strongman routine won't make them break off economic and diplomatic relations. What's significant here is that despite increasing American pressure for those leaders to break off all ties with China, few appear to be listening - and given that China is perhaps the most important economy on the planet right now, that is a very predictable outcome.

As the current American empire takes actions to try and avoid their doom, those very actions only guarantee it. As Latin America grows ever more interconnected with China and continues to develop, America will grow ever more panicked and demanding, and this feedback loop will - eventually - result in the death of the Monroe Doctrine.

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

Trump bans foreign students from enrolling at Harvard. Current students must transfer or be deported.

Associated PressWASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration revoked Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students in its escalating battle with the Ivy League school, saying thousands of current students must transfer to other schools or leave the country.

The Department of Homeland Security announced the action Thursday, saying Harvard has created an unsafe campus environment by allowing “anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators” to assault Jewish students on campus. Without offering evidence, it also accused Harvard of coordinating with the Chinese communist party.

“This means Harvard can no longer enroll foreign students and existing foreign students must transfer or lose their legal status,” the agency said in a statement.

Harvard enrolls almost 6,800 foreign students at its campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, accounting for more than a quarter of its student body. Most are graduate students, coming from more than 100 countries.

“This administration is holding Harvard accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus,” Kristi Noem said in a statement.

The administration revoked Harvard’s certification in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which gives the school the ability to sponsor international students to get their visas and attend school in the United States

Holy shit that's awesome, like genuinely a bullet to america's influence on developing countries' elites.

I remember reading something about how "we'll enroll your oldest son into X american elite university" was one of the most effective ways to bribe government officials into supporting american interests

[–] gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net 40 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I think the impact will be minimal at best. Harvard doesn't have a huge leg above Yale, Princeton and Stanford for the humanities and they are behind MIT, Caltech, CMU and arguably Berkeley for STEM. The influence will remain through those institutions and this act is done due to Trump's personal vendetta against Harvard.

Two ballistic missiles launched from Yemen towards Israel over the past 24 hours. A Rezvan/Zulfiqar ballistic missile last night, intercepted by Arrow 3, with debris seen flying over Israel. The second missile was a Fattah-1 during the day, with parts of it intercepted by the David's Sling system. A piece of the booster stage was found in Israel. Booster stages still have the inertia from the initial launch, so they can travel in space and often land somewhere near the target.

Fattah-1 booster stage:

Statements from the Yemeni Armed Forces:

Update to the naming conventions:

  • Unnamed Hypersonic Ballistic Missile = Fattah-1
  • Palestine-2 = Fattah-1/Kheibar-Shekan hybrid variant.
  • Palestine-1 = Kheibar Shekan-2.
  • Hatem-2 = Kheibar Shekan-1.
  • Zulfiqar = Rezvan (initially thought it was a Qassem variant, but that was incorrect).

When did David's sling get the ability to intercept hypersonics?

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 13 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago) (1 children)

David's Sling was designed to intercept the latest generation of highly maneuverable tactical ballistic missiles in the terminal phase. Missiles such as ATACMS, Iskander-M, Fateh-110 and 313, Raad-500, etc. The Stunner missile fired by the David's Sling system uses a kinetic hit to kill interception, travels at speeds of Mach 7.5+ with a three pulse rocket motor, and has a multimode asymmetrical seeker (active radar + two different infrared homing systems), nicknamed a dolphin seeker because if it's shape. This makes it highly capable at terminal phase intercepts of these shorter range missile. Ultimately David's Sling low maximum altitude of 15km makes it sub-optimal for intercepting longer range ballistic missiles. However a target is a target, and with MaRV (Maneuverable Re-entry Vehicle) equipped longer range ballistic missiles potentially gliding under the engagement floor/minimum altitude of longer range terminal engagement systems like THAAD and potentially Arrow-2, they very well could end up in the engagement envelope of David's Sling. To glide under the engagement envelope of Arrow-2, the MaRV would have to perform a fairly long glide below an altitude of 8km, which would put it firmly within the engagement envelope of David's Sling. It's unlikely that it would be flying at hypersonic speeds at this point, aerodynamic drag from re-entry, pull-up maneuver(s) and gliding at low altitude will have an effect on speed, even on MaRVs with a sustainer rocket motor as part of them like Fattah-1 or Palestine-2. David's Sling already did provide some last minute intercepts of MaRV capable ballistic missiles during Iran's ballistic missile attack on Israel, Operation True Promise II, in October last year. David's Sling could also be being used to intercept debris, like a booster stage for instance, or parts of a previously intercepted warhead.

Thank you for your response. I always appreciate your in-depth knowledge on missile systems.

The Wire (India): CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Nambala Keshava Rao Killed In Encounter in Chhattisgarh

CPI(ML) statementCPI(ML) strongly condemns the cold-blooded extra-judicial killing of the General Secretary of CPI(Maoist) Comrade Keshav Rao and other Maoist activists and Adivasis in Narayanpur-Bijapur.

From the celebratory post of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, it is clear that the state is spearheading Operation Kagar as an extra-judicial extermination campaign and taking credit for killing citizens and suppressing Adivasi protests against corporate plunder and militarisation in the name of combating Maoism.

We appeal to all justice-loving Indians to insist on a judicial probe into the massacre and demand an immediate end to the military operation, especially when the Maoists have declared a unilateral ceasefire.

Ok maybe I'm speaking too soon but I kinda expected a bigger immediate fallout after the killing of the 2 zionist goons. We're hearing the expected condemnations from public officials, fascists yapping about rising antisemitism, but that's been it so far.

[–] sempersigh@hexbear.net 19 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

The news cycle is very overstimulating right now and there’s already too much other crazy shit for them to focus on right now. The admin decided to ban international students from Harvard (not in response to what happened they were gonna announce this either way) plus there’s no other shortage of other things to focus on.

If the administration was “smart” they would hyper focus on this and not announce any new policies until they’ve fully taken advantage of this but they’re gonna lose their window of time imo.

On the other hand I think they’re planning on essentially putting all pro Palestinian orgs on the terror list regardless in the medium term and it’s plausible this accelerates the timeline on that

Khaled Barakat (his organization Samidoun was repressed out of the North American continent last year) had this to say about the denazification in the American capitol:

Palestinian writer Khaled Barakat, a member of the Executive Committee of the Masar Badil, the Palestinian Alternative Revolutionary Path Movement, stated that “the shooting incident that occurred in the U.S. capital, Washington, targeting employees of the “Israeli” embassy, is a natural consequence of the Zionist entity’s crimes in the Gaza Strip.”

Barakat added: “It is impossible to separate the reaction from the broader political and humanitarian context, by which we mean the ongoing Zionist massacre in Gaza for over twenty months — one of the most heinous genocidal crimes of the twenty-first century. It is a massacre that continues to this moment and will lead to further anger and violence toward the Zionist presence as a whole, and toward all those who support this entity in occupied Palestine and across the world.”

He continued: “‘Israel,’ with the support and complicity of Western governments — foremost among them the United States — has committed a series of crimes that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinians, including thousands of children and women, through bombing, siege, and starvation, all amid a disgraceful international silence. Why do some express surprise at the human reactions to these horrific massacres? It is only inevitable that those who sow fire in Gaza should expect to reap a harvest of fire, in Gaza and in cities and capitals around the world.”

He concluded by saying: “This explosion of anger in the heart of the U.S. capital is neither isolated nor random, but one of the manifestations of pain and deep rage stemming from the international community’s disregard for the suffering of Palestinians, and its complicity in shielding the killers and granting them impunity. We affirm that the occupation is the original crime, and that those who seek to criminalize the reactions while remaining silent on the massacre are complicit in the ongoing crime.”

Russia-China Forum Concludes in Khabarovsk With 34 Cooperation Agreements - Telesur English

Article

The two-day event focused on strengthening economic partnerships. On Tuesday, the Russia-China Forum concluded in the city of Khabarovsk, seeing the signing of 34 cooperation agreements worth US$1.24 billion, spanning economy, tourism, culture and ecology.

The two-day forum focused on strengthening economic partnerships, fostering cross-border dialogue, and advancing joint innovation and cultural ties. A key topic was the joint development of Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island (known as Heixiazi Island in China).

Governor of Khabarovsk Territory Dmitry Demeshin emphasized the importance of enriching the island with economic projects while preserving its natural environment and cultural heritage.

A major focus was the establishment of a year-round cargo and passenger checkpoint on the island, which is expected to boost passenger traffic to 1.5 million annually and cargo flow to 1.3 million tons.

A key highlight of the forum was the plenary session titled “Russia and China: Uniting Efforts for Shared Prosperity,” where representatives from both nations’ governments and businesses discussed economic partnerships, border region development, investments, trade, industrial cooperation and cultural ties.

Cross-border economic cooperation has brought tangible success to businesses in Khabarovsk. Roman Degtyarev, manager of the Khabarovsk Baltika Breweries, said at the Russia-China Forum that his company has focused on developing the Chinese market. Over the past 14 years, the export volume of Baltika beer from Khabarovsk to China has increased 15-fold.

Thanks to close cooperation with Chinese suppliers, the Khabarovsk-based company BEEZONE uses Chinese parts to assemble bulldozers for the Russian and Belarusian markets. Currently, BEEZONE has developed into the fourth-largest heavy-duty bulldozer manufacturer in Russia.

The Russia-China Forum included over 30 thematic sessions and cultural events, drawing more than 3,000 participants from governments, businesses and creative industries from both countries
