No, in 5 years 1980 will have been 50 years ago, and the '80s will have been 40 years ago.

[–] CheeseToastie@lazysoci.al 7 points 2 days ago

I like that justification

[–] chonglibloodsport@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I was going to say! I was born in the 80s and I’m only 41. If I turned 50 in 5 years I would be very upset!

[–] Jimbabwe@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Hell yeah ‘83 vintage. Best year.

[–] HexesofVexes@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

It will also be in 50 years time.

Oh you can fuck right off, Skeletor

[–] speendle@feddit.uk 40 points 3 days ago (1 children)

1989 won't have been 50 years ago.

[–] Kbobabob@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Neither would the other 8 years prior. What's your point?

[–] Pnut@lemm.ee 6 points 2 days ago

..their point is pretty obvious. You OK?

[–] Squorlple@lemmy.world 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The 80’s will to be 50 years from now, too

[–] Mist101@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As long as they're as radical the second time around, I'm game.

[–] Pnut@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago

I was born in the late 80s and they had so much fun that we could smell it throughout the 90s. Maybe even into the early 00s.

They will be 41 years ago actually.

The 80's is older to us that the 2nd World War was to them.

In 1989, Hitler killed himself 44 years ago.

In 2025, John Lennon was killed 45 years ago.

First of all, how dare you

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago (3 children)

I’m a firm believer each nominal decade (“the 80s” in this case) starts with the year ending in 1 (1981-1990).

Mathematically it’s correct (there was no year 0), but more to the point look at anything in the popular culture in 1980, doesn’t it look like it’s from the 70s? Video from 1990 doesn’t look “90s”, it looks 80s.

[–] TimewornTraveler@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

"yea I'm an 80s baby"

"when were you born?"

"1990"

UTTERLY DERANGED

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

To be fair, someone born in 1989 saying they're an 80s baby would likewise get sideeyed from me.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

there was no year 0

Just because no one said it was there, doesn't mean it wasn't.

It's like vaccines and autism and other things RFK doesnt believe in. They still exist!

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Dionysius did not use a year zero; the year preceding AD 1 was 1 BC.

  • “The Oxford Companion to the Year” by Blackburn & Holford-Strevens

There was not a year zero. This isn’t a conspiracy theory.

[–] Malfeasant@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

BC and AD are separate numbering schemes- so just because there is no year 0 defined doesn't mean you can't extrapolate - 0 AD is the same as 1 BC, and you'll have -1 AD which is equivalent to 2 BC and so forth...

[–] workerONE@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Also the 80s is plural so in 1980 there was only one 80, but by 1981 there were two 80s.

[–] cyrano@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 3 days ago
[–] dryfter@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago

This makes me feel old, but not as much as realizing I’m less than 10 years from senior discounts

[–] ptz@dubvee.org 5 points 3 days ago

How dare you!

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Reign in blood isn't even 40 yet.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

...and in the '80s they taught us

  • '80s is an abbreviation
  • 80's is a failure and they kept failures back a year to learn it again

Good times.

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

The 80's are weird, dude. It's like the 70's never were a thing and feels like if it were like a proto version of the 90's.

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

A little bit of it will, but most of it won't.
