A community for Cartographers with nothing left to lose.

Rules:

Don't be awful Lemmy Guidelines Still Apply.

No direct upload images This is hosted on Lemm.ee- to post images, you must use an image upload service like Imgur to post maps.

We are agents of chaos I've created this to be the alternative to the community I used to manage on the website that shalt not be named "mapporncirclejerk"

Live and let die Meme trends happen, so please don't message mods asking to take down maps that are repetitive to a bit.

Reposts Vs. Covers Not all reposts are evil- if someone posts something that has been done years ago, it serves to bring old memes to the new users. I call these meme covers. However it can be done in excess which makes it a repost and spam. Mods will determine if a post is a cover or a repost.

No impersonating mods I can't believe I had to make this rule.

No harassing mods on an appeal We can talk it out, and we will be acting in good faith when making decisions. If you disagree with a removal, you are free to message for clarification or to appeal by giving some added context.

Bans Bans will be set to a maximum of 365 days for humans, and a minimum of 365 years for bots. I believe people can change, so if you are banned for good reason, do know that it is not permanent, it is just a way to say "take time to grow and come back when you are ready".

Not enough fuck you in those lines. You need to have the borders cut off historical populations from each other or put a bunch of clashing ethnic groups in the same state. Like make a border running right through paris or smash all the balkans back together.

Suggestions for maximum chaos and discord:

  • Split the Nordic peninsula into 3 countries, but borders run east-west. People in former Finland have to go through another country to get around the Gulf of Bothnia / Baltic Sea.
  • Expand borders of Germany, you know, just so they can have some Lebensraum. There won't be any issues with that surely.
  • Balkan superstate. Make sure everyone has a voice in its vibrant democracy, but gerrymander the hell out of it.
  • Merge southern France, Spain and Italy so the merged country can have maximum Mediterranean beachfront. Just think of the tourism revenues!
  • Leave Northern Ireland exactly as it is.

Ahem, Ireland would like a word…

Like splitting a bunch of hungarians off from hungary or putting a bunch of croats and serbs in the same country... oh wait /s

[–] 7EP6vuI@feddit.org 75 points 2 days ago (4 children)

they would have created borders in a way, that one country always consists of two nations/tribes that don't like each other.

the map simply shows straightened borders for existing countries...

[–] lugal@lemmy.dbzer0.com 44 points 2 days ago (5 children)

...and call that country "Belgium"

[–] DeltaWingDragon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

You should probably confine that sort of remark to something artistic.

[–] wewbull@feddit.uk 5 points 1 day ago

Colonization 101.

You, the colonizer, land on an island with three tribes. Call them Lions, Tigers, and Bears. The Lions are 50% of the population, and control 80% of the wealth. The Tigers are 40% of the population and control 15% of the wealth. The Bears are 10% of the population and have 5% of the wealth. You recruit the Bears to be your army and promise them 10% of the wealth. They love you because you've made them richer than they were before, and they get pay back against the folks who were their enemies forever.

I'd imagine there'd also be borders set within a given "tribe" where one group's land was split between different colonizing powers and the different colonies ended up with different governments and possibly languages from one another.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Which of course makes identifying borders really hard. This is why they often follow distinct geography features like rivers and mountain ranges, or form a line between distinct features.

Also never known of an entire continent acting as a single force.

What's with Belarus having a schlong?

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 23 points 2 days ago

Yeah, this is way too respectful of ethnic groups.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago

It sure wouldn't be if it was Sykes or Picot drawing those borders.

Why the fuck is Kalliningrad still in this map?

Like are there any such situations in other colonized continents?

Great alternate history science fiction novel. What if the Black Plague had killed 99% of the European population. Who would have stepped up?

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Isn't that what happened anyway?

[–] Dagwood222@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago

No, the Black Death killed about half of the population.

I'll edit.
