Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Phoenix TV: We’ve been hearing the U.S. say that China and the U.S. are having talks and even about to reach a deal. Can you confirm whether the two sides are in talks?

Guo Jiakun: None of that is true. For all I know, China and the U.S. are not having any consultation or negotiation on tariffs, still less reaching a deal.

This tariff war is launched by the U.S. China’s position is consistent and clear: We will fight, if fight we must. Our doors are open, if the U.S. wants to talk. Dialogue and negotiation must be based on equality, respect and mutual benefit.

NHK: I also have a question about tariffs. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration may reduce tariffs on Chinese imports in some cases by more than half. Additionally, President Trump said it depends on China how soon the tariffs can come down. What is your reaction to this news and statement?

Guo Jiakun: I just made clear China’s position. Let me stress again that this tariff war is launched by the U.S., and China’s attitude is consistent and clear. If a negotiated solution is truly what the U.S. wants, it should stop exerting extreme pressure, stop threatening and blackmailing China, and seek dialogue based on equality, respect and mutual benefit.

AFP: U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday that Beijing’s export reliant economic model is unsustainable and harms both China and the rest of the world. What is the Foreign Ministry’s comment on this?

Guo Jiakun: The truth, which is clear to all, is that the U.S. tariffs are seriously undermining the WTO rules and harming the common interests of all countries.

After a lifetime watching the US just bully everyone I am so here for the way China is hardlining this. It's cathartic.

They're demonstrating the one thing that reactionaries respect

Reactionaries only respect the in-group, and only for ex post facto reasons. An opponent showing resilience and otherwise strength isn't something they react positively to.

Respect, I think, in the way they'd "respect" someone pointing a gun at them: they would be forced to acknowledge that that person has the capacity to fuck up their day

Yeah. The difference between the genteel Republicans of my grandfather's generation and those today is that Democrats refuse to express power to oppose conservatives today.

The Republicans weren't kinder, they were just forced to negotiate with their opponents out of necessity, and as a result, followed the norms and decorums that Democrats lament the loss of today.

Trump is trying to treat China like he treats Democrats or poor people. Eventually he will either be forced to realize that China's ability to punch back means he has to respect them, or China's punch is going to knock him out cold.

ofc not. the Trump admin doesn't even know what it wants.

USA's vassal state Japan, AS SOON AS TARIFFS were announced, put together an economy/negotiating team and got their ass straight to Washington.

they sat around, said over and over again "WHAT DO YOU WANT FFS?????" with the Trump team making no demands or anything.

A few months ago I told the American people I would make China kneel. My heart and my best intentions tell me that's true, but the facts and evidence tell me it is not.

It is a bit ironic that the US used sanctions and tariffs to harm so many other countries but now believes that cutting off trade from their own country will help the US. "Live by the sword, die by the sword" type situation.
