In the U.S., there is a large amount of boomers that dangle a promise of inheritance over their children, often to be able to continue to abuse them well through adulthood (just in different ways).
Our government is the boomer parent that is now realizing that other countries are like the children who have become educated, and done the work to heal from their traumas. Who then realize they are OK on their own without their parent’s safety net/support. In fact, they are better off without them altogether. Their parents were the only ones ever benefiting from the relationship. Yet, the parents are always confused when their attempts at financial manipulation fail.
Europe is also stabbing itself though lol. Germany basically committed suicide over Ukraine/Russia
