Perhaps Canadian politicians can be forgiven their slowness of uptake, given that Trump's comments are entirely unprecedented in modern U.S.-Canadian relations.

But there is one strong parallel for his remarks. While Trump's words may never move past the talking stage, they resemble the claims, pretexts and justifications used by Russia's Vladimir Putin before and during his invasion of Ukraine.

First is the claim that lots of Canadians want to become Americans. Some in Trump's Make America Great Again movement have explained the absence of a visible groundswell of support for annexation in Canada as a result of a harsh regime of censorship, as decried by Elon Musk and this week by Joe Rogan.

In a long op-ed he wrote in July 2021, Putin laid out his claim that the Ukrainian people, in their hearts, aspired to be part of Mother Russia, but their voices were censored.

"There are millions of such people," he wrote. "But they are not allowed to raise their heads. They have had their legal opportunity to defend their point of view taken away from them."

I've never known a single person who wanted to become American.

Any why would we?

For the gun violence? The rampant racism? The domestic terrorism? The corrupt government? A poor healthcare system? Natural disasters? Nazi leadership?

As our fellow Danes would agree:

I've been offered a huge salary increase to move down there, my friends and family all thought I was crazy to even think about it. Hell nah

That's like someone offering you a million dollars to hold your breath underwater for an hour. LOL

I enjoyed travelling to States years ago, and won't deny the beautiful landscapes you can come across. But I'd never dream of wanting to actually become an American citizen.

Canadians that want to become Americans, aren’t in fact Canadian. Luckily, they can leave and get the fuck out of our great nation. Good riddance to scum.

Ukraine told that to Russians, they opted to collaborate with the invasion force... There is a lesson in there.

I ain't big on government making lists but this one of them times where government prolly should be making lists of the future traitors

I heard of some group in Regina who met to discuss this poop this past weekend. I only heard of it second hand but I am hoping the RCMP, hell maybe even CSIS, was paying attention. They are probably just some of those trucker idiots but it is treason they were discussing.

The thing about the trucker idiots is that invasion happens, they spotting and reporting troop movements.

They all know where shit is located around town.

They can place beacons for bombing raids.

When Ukraine invasion happened big part of shock and awe by Russia was usage of these NPCs.

Point being never under estimate a useful idiot
