Summary

Trump reiterated his proposal for the U.S. to take over Gaza after Israel’s military campaign, despite backlash from Republicans, international leaders, and human rights groups.

The plan, announced without consulting aides or conducting feasibility studies, suggests relocating Palestinians and rebuilding Gaza as a tourist hub.

The White House attempted damage control, calling relocation "temporary," but concerns persist over the plan’s implications and potential for escalating regional tensions.

This isn't even a political issue really.

Trump's ENTIRE motivation is the prospect of his family making a fortune in Gaza waterfront real estate.

[–] Asafum@feddit.nl 5 points 3 days ago

"Mr Trump there are those that say your only motivation for this is to enrich yourself, how do you respond?"

"Of course the lying crooked media would say that I am going to enrich myself. Is my name Donald Trump Jr? There's no Jr in my name so obviously I'm not the corrupt one here!"

Let's also not forget that his whole grand idea to "take over" Gaza was discussed with nobody (apart from maybe sycophants) before he threw it on the table. Netanyahu himself had no idea until immediately before they took the stage together. Nobody in the State Department or Pentagon had any idea. Congress had no idea. WH Press Secretary had no idea.

Somebody planted that idea in his head and he just went with it.

That somebody's name rhymes with Lared Lushner.

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Trump imagines himself a real estate magnate who builds luxury vacation properties, this might genuinely be one of his own ideas this time. It's terrible enough that I'd believe it.

I could certainly see this coming out of his own demented brain, but it is definitely Jared in this case.

They discussed it publicly. Dumbass Jr has been tweeting about it for months.

It's the usual pandemonium we saw in the first term. People who are loyal to Trump started trying to make what he said sound even somewhat sensible. But then Trump came back out and contradicted the walk-backs.

AP had a good story on this a couple days back. In their own words: What Trump said about Gaza and how top administration officials contradicted him.

Everybody knows palestinians would never be allowed to return if ethnic cleansing succeeds.

If there’s one silver lining to this insanity it’s that it does seem like there is widespread consensus in American society that we don’t want any more foreign wars or adventurism.

[–] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Don't worry, eventually there will be another USS Maine event to justify another round of imperialism. Our oligarchs wouldn't let a good opportunity go to waste.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Eventually yes probably but the mood right now continues to be very anti-war at least in terms of direct US involvement. So that makes these imperialist fantasies at least more difficult and costly to implement.

Trump likes to cosplay as the supreme leader but like all presidents he has limited political capital to spend and going against his base will be very costly indeed.

[–] Olgratin_Magmatoe@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 days ago

I hope you're right.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

That's the best thing about a Trump presidency. He's constitutionally incapable of self-control, and his absurdity usually leads to some unintended positive side effects.

[–] demonsword@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

there is widespread consensus in American society that we don’t want any more foreign wars or adventurism.

the USA has been at war for over 90% of its history, if what you said is true it will probably change very soon

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago

I can’t predict the future, I’m just speaking to what I see in the culture today. I heard from a lot of Trump voters that their perception of him as an anti-war candidate was a factor in their support, so I do think this is true in this moment. How deeply held that conviction is and how easily it will be swayed when our rulers decide war is to their favor remains to be seen but at minimum it will require political capital to drag people along with their imperialism.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not much of a silver lining when it's very clear that he could not give less of a shit about widespread consensus.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You don’t seem to have a clear understanding of politics. He doesn’t have a choice. Like all leaders, Trump’s power comes from his supporters. If they don’t follow him then he can’t do a damn thing.

Now I think it’s possible he may be able to drag them along but the fact that people on the right are already rejecting this idea is a good sign.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I just stopped reading at your initial personal attack. Not even a little interested.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

It’s not an attack it’s just a lack of knowledge that almost all people share. But we need to understand these things to fight back.

But whatever, I can’t force you to be interested.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world -2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

It is, in fact, an attack to tell someone that you know nothing about that they are ignorant about a vast topic based on a single comment.

But whatever, I can't force you to not act like you're a superior being. You're not "almost all people" after all. You're special.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Maybe you are right that I should have phrased it differently. I apologize for that but I am frustrated by this kind of rhetoric that in my view misses the underlying dynamics and makes us feel powerless.

[–] Damage@slrpnk.net 1 points 3 days ago

There's nothing wrong with your phrasing

[–] MothmanDelorian@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

He has to. Miriam Adelson owner of The Las Vegas Sands casinos and The Dallas Mavericks gave him $150 million to do this.

Oh wait no that’s the West Bank she wants to steal. Things are going to get worse.

Stage Three: parlamentary takeover.

The counting is going by fast.
