it should be noted that the '1 dead' was by suicide after their vehicle was disabled and they fled on foot.

They didn't say suicide or "shot himself" in the other article, so I initially thought it was an accident. But then I realized, and it made me sad.

If I'm reading that right, all three groups traveled from the US to the Canadian side.

[–] Arkouda@lemmy.ca 113 points 20 hours ago (5 children)

I think it is time to tariff the US until they get their borders under control and stop the flow of illegal immigrants, drugs, and guns across our borders!

MILLIONS of people from mental asylums!

[–] pupbiru@aussie.zone 21 points 19 hours ago

just 1 really big asylum

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 21 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

They're sending their best (seriously, the bar is that low on America... it's actually really sad)

[–] Atropos@lemmy.world 21 points 20 hours ago

A decent portion of our best have already left.

I'm going to stay and fight, but I respect the ones who choose to leave.

You know it is bad when "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" only existed because "Are you smarter than a 7th grader" would be too difficult for the average person in the US to win.

Joking aside, it is really sad especially when you see the state the country is in today because of the brain drain over the last few decades leaving about 75% of the US adult population with literacy skills at or below a 6th grade level. (21% is clinically illiterate)

So.. Be as bad as they are to people trying to escape fascism?

[–] makuus@pawb.social 5 points 19 hours ago

We’re not sending our best…

[–] shoulderoforion@fedia.io -4 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

I mean that's always an option, only problem with that is Trump will just turn around and tariff you more

[–] shoulderoforion@fedia.io -1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

No, I got it, I'm just glad you guys can find it within yourself to still make jokes, while Trump is bitch slapping you for no good reason other to show everyone else in the world he'll do it to them next. I think it all sucks man, and I feel really bad for Canada.

[–] grte@lemmy.ca 6 points 18 hours ago

Bitch slapping us? Where are those doubled tariffs he threatened to levy on us if we counter tariffed the US? Only bitch here is your bitch ass leadership.

[–] halcyoncmdr@lemmy.world -1 points 17 hours ago

Another mouthbreather that doesn't understand tariffs.

Amazing considering a glance at the Wikipedia page would be enough of an education to understand how tariffs don't help at all.

In both cases involving people on foot, Moreland said the migrants were not dressed for the cold, Canadian temperatures.

β€œThey did not have hats, gloves, mitts, or anything that we would normally see in a Canadian winter,” Moreland said.

β€œI will note in both all the incidents that I described today, both in Manitoba and Alberta, the weather was incredibly cold and ranging from -20 to -30 C without factoring in the wind chill.”

Wouldn’t be surprised if all of these people came down with some form of frostbite.

[–] Someone@lemmy.ca 12 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

The thing I don't understand is that they're also clearly not dressed for the cold American winter either, it's not like the climate cares about the border.

If they were, for instance, originally from Mexico, living in Arizona, and out of fear decided to drive as far north as possible, then get across the Canadian border in a place without roadblocks, they wouldn't even own snow clothes. They might have originally thought they could stay in the car the whole way. Or a smuggler dumped them out of a truck in the middle of nowhere.

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 6 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

That's how a family died here in Manitoba a few years ago.. their "guy" dropped them off a little ways from the border for them to hoof it the rest of the way... Rcmp found them later frozen in a field. Worst part is they had an 11 year old and a baby with them.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 3 points 17 hours ago

They could have left travelling from a warmer state and just didn't have/couldn't afford warmer clothing.

[–] CForsyth@lemmy.ca 2 points 16 hours ago

I drive from Winnipeg to Iowa a lot and the difference is staggering.

There isn't snow on the fields until you are north of Grand Forks.

A little further south and its sweater weather in January

[–] Rocketpoweredgorilla@lemmy.ca 15 points 20 hours ago

Jeez that's a heavy price to pay, but I'm happy it worked out for them. I've lived in Mb most of my life and wouldn't want to pull that stunt in the middle of our winters.

[–] veeesix@lemmy.ca 9 points 19 hours ago

God damn: go back to your home country and risk getting killed or live out the rest of your life without all of your fingers.

[–] LostWon@lemmy.ca 14 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Interesting. I'd hoped they would have more details about motives and how unusual this is country-wide, though. :/

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

Yeah, I can only assume if it's families it must be undocumented people who had already escaped to America from elsewhere and don't want to now be separated from their children. But really the lack of context is not great.

Just how the incidents went down and that the info came from an RCMP press conference.
