I don't think it's illegal. The amount of citizen with access to enough wealth to own a car is just relatively low

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Private car ownership is highly restricted. You only have access to a car if you are a party member, are conducting business for the party, or are well connected.

Their society is very localized and travel is restricted(you need a permit to leave your county), trains and bicycles are how you move about if you aren't walking.

Nice, they've solved the climate crisis. It truly is the greatest country.

[–] Death_Equity@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

If every nation could only be a failed state with a 60% poverty level and be propped up by multiple superpowers, we could totally kick the can at least another generation.

Those roads are probably for police and military so they can arrive quickly in case of invasion or citizens becoming uppity.

[–] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure, but that thing is 4 lanes in either direction. That's a lot of asphalt for a whole bunch of nothing.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 weeks ago

Kim must love drag racing I guess

[–] hesusingthespiritbomb@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Also why the US highway system was built, btw. The president who championed it, Eisenhower, was the commander of US allied forces during WW2. While there were other benefits, his goal was to be able to quickly transport troops in the event of a Soviet invasion.

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Which is a fucking dumb idea seeing how shitty the US rail system is.

Bomb railway

Oops looks like no more movement for the forseeable future until we can get engineers to fill the crater and rebuild the track to spec. If you mess up repairs, the whole train can derail and back to square 1!

Bomb highway

Oops looks like you have to go around the crater, that might add a minute to your journey. If it's really big, you might have to take a ten minute detour until we can slather some gravel and asphalt over the hole.

[–] Maalus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Lmao if you think "bomb railway" is somehow easier than "bomb highway" then you are higher than the highways themselves.

~~you can't land planes on a railway. the interstate system in the US also doubles as emergency runways for aircraft. It's actually baked into the system on purpose.~~ nevermind, turns out that "fun fact" I was about to tell you all is a myth, according to the DOT.

[–] Krik@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 20 hours ago

In Germany some sections of the Autobahn do double as runways for aircraft. The middle section has a dividing wall that can be removed if necessary. Afaik they are supposed to be used during war. I don't know if they are still being used except to test if new fighter jets are able to land and start again.

[–] CitizenKong@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Which was also the real reason Hitler built the Autobahn (or rather, continued and expanded the plans that already existed).

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

And why Eisenhower built the interstates. They even used dod funding

[–] lurklurk@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

They're cosplaying a successful country

[–] spamspeicher@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe they are a cargo cult? Build big streets and the wealth will come!

[–] takeda@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

LOL, if one can afford a car in NK, it must be a dream to drive it. Roads as wide as in California with zero traffic.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No one driving on it and it’s still full of potholes and poorly patched.

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

An empty road full of potholes and the only other people driving are people I probably know by name?

This is Mario Kart IRL

[–] bobs_monkey@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago

That banana peel with rot before it gets someone

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Why are all the trees dead?

[–] BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] GBU_28@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Insane you found 4 of the same looking tree. If you look closely you can see the branch structure is super similar

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I imagine one person deliberately took all 4 pics

[–] atlas@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

i doubt it, that's too much work for one person

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago

They even painted the ground to match the tree type smh

[–] TheGoldenGod@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

They are still waiting on their permits for water.

[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

The US bombed them so severely that only 20% of their land is arable

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Hate hearing about your countries war crimes so much that you have to find a way to dismiss them? There is a reason they hate America.

[–] PoolloverNathan@programming.dev 1 points 2 weeks ago

Nobody thinks America's great; your instance is just insufferable.

[–] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Nice try, tankie, but 20% is higher than the US. The world average is 10%.

[–] rational_lib@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Correct, sorted by arable land %, NK is actually pretty high on the list. The land is arable, but the dictator is unbearable.

[–] napkin2020@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

They don't want anyone to go anywhere without being extra nice. It's not car centered city, it's a huge prison.

[–] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 2 points 2 weeks ago

But think of the impressive military parades.

[–] Blackmist@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago

They need wide roads. Who knows how fat Kim Jong Un is going to get?

[–] jaybone@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

That’s a city.
