Right now is the best period of time yet for Firefox-based browser, especially when most alternative browsers are Chrome-based.

While there are a bunch of forks like Librewolf and Palemoon, they provide features mainly for power users like hardened privacy and tweaked user-prefs. A year ago the only fork I knew of, based on recent stable versions of Firefox and added productivity features on top was Floorp. I was very surprised at the hype and sudden popularity of Zen Browser in the past few months and have been curious why it grew so much faster than Floorp which has been around for much longer, look at the Github star graph: https://star-history.com/#zen-browser/desktop&Date. Zen Browser currently has 19.3K stars while Floorp has 6.1K.

Reasons I can think of are the following: heavy promotion of the browser by the devs and community on places like Reddit along with emphasizing its 'zen' philosophy, really fast development (it now has way more features than Floorp), and the Zen mods store, where you can install CSS mods.

What are your thoughts and reasons for Zen Browser becoming so popular so fast? (while its not mainstream, it did grow fast in among Firefox and power users)

Those who are using Zen, can you confirm if the Zen perform better (in terms of performance) than vanilla Firefox?

Didnt daily use it, but based on some of my eyes it seem to be faster than librewolf. I don't know what about Firefox tho

Floorp is a fucking stupid name, so id say it's good

[–] Carighan@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago

I have never heard of either.

For me the zen interface is really nice. I tried out Zen because of a lemmy post and liked their interface so much more than firefox I instantly switched.

Better name?

It's way more attractive imo then floorp. Development is continuously happening and features that have been wanted have been implemented within weeks of them being first suggested. The interface is beautiful and customisable, a contrast from floorps, which was useable but not beautiful or customisable, outside of the few options they provided.

Zen Browers gives a new look and feel to Firefox, while Floorp uses the same design and makes their added features look like some extenstions rather then build in features.

And I think a big advantage for Zen browser is, that it presents itself as an OSS alternative for the popular Arc browser, without mandatory account.

Happily using Zen browser until Servo comes along to eat Mozillas lunch finally.

I mean isn't Servo just the Gecko replacement?

I am super excited about too, but it's kind of funny to say eat the company that built it and language around it's lunch lol

https://github.com/versotile-org/verso

This is the actual browser implementation being developed alongside. I just say Servo because more people recognize that name at the moment.

That statement made me happy and sad at same time

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip -4 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

I could care less about both

[–] iopq@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

So you must care quite a bit, then

[–] mub@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 hours ago

The phrase is "I Couldn't care less".

Sry. Long day. Still in pedantic mode.
