Well, that's the end, guys!

The two federal cases are being shut down, Jack Smith is retiring, and there's no way the Georgia case goes forward if a literal conviction is paused.

America was nice while it lasted!

I guess when you’re a star, they really do let you do it. What a slap in the face to the jury, witnesses, and prosecutors, though, who spent their time on this case and risked reprisal from MAGA extremists.

[-] Captainvaqina@sh.itjust.works 44 points 3 weeks ago

And to every single American who isn't a filthy magat traitor.

America is finished. Laws are meaningless.

The end was really about 8 years ago. The last few weeks, and upcoming years will be the final nails in the coffin.

As a 4th generation veteran, it makes me sad.

[-] IronJess@lemmy.today 10 points 3 weeks ago

It was before Trump, George W. Bush turned Americans into unthinking morons.

[-] GladiusB@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Regan. Regan is where it really all started. Corporate America took over then. And the American dream turned into who can kiss the most ass.

Justice is blind, y'all! I guess we just have to accept that some people are more equal than others, especially the rich.

[-] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Well... there's always vigilante justice.

[-] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

It was attempted twice. Unsuccessfully

Do you want President Vance? This is how you get President Vance!

[-] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

We can treat symptoms as long as it takes to find a cure. I imagine there's a long line after Vance, too, but the same medicine works on on all of them.

[-] DontRedditMyLemmy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

The cure is an informed and active electorate, and we're headed in the wrong direction. (Except that WW3, now more likely, could bolster education in the following decades.)

[-] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 24 points 3 weeks ago

Great job turning in your homework at the last minute prosecutors!

[-] superkret@feddit.org 13 points 3 weeks ago

I bet he's gonna travel to Moscow for a "diplomatic visit" soon.

[-] Poppa_Mo@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Nah. Putin will come here where it's warm. They'll have a sleepover in the oval office where Vlad will paint Donnie's face bronze while recounting stories about how gravity is a huge cause of death in Russia.

[-] superkret@feddit.org 4 points 3 weeks ago

Making Donnie come to him is a power move, though.

[-] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 weeks ago

And having him in the oval office is a slap to the rest of us. I'll let you determine who the "him" is in this situation.

[-] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 6 points 3 weeks ago

By the pussy!

[-] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

This makes my stomach turn. The courts have failed us, time to bring back the guillotine.

[-] sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 weeks ago

did y'all actually think anything would come of it?

[-] ClassStruggle@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

For the last several years I called it a dog and pony show to keep liberals riled up

[-] EmpireInDecay@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

it's always been a dog and pony show

[-] FlowVoid@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

What makes you think this is over?

This is exactly what you'd expect if the judge wants to sentence Trump to jail. He can't do it now, it would be immediately overturned by the SCOTUS.

So he no choice but to wait until 2028 (or possibly sooner, in the unlikely event that Trump is impeached again).

[-] Malek061@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago

Supreme Court has no power over a state court ruling.

[-] FlowVoid@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Of course they do. To name just one example, in Bush v Gore the SCOTUS overturned a ruling made by the Florida Supreme Court.

[-] LANIK2000@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Unless someone keeps appealing to a higher court and non along the way reject it, you can always reach the supreme court.

[-] jordanlund@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

Trump can't get impeached until 2027 at the soonest because of the Republican controlled House.

Even then, the Senate will prevent his removal.

[-] FlowVoid@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

As I said, he's unlikely to be impeached. But it's not impossible, if his deport+tariff plan sparks a Depression scale stock market crash and his popularity plummets. In that case, the oligarchs and populists of the GOP might agree they prefer Vance.
