I'm actually not sure I understand this one... sounds more like they're just having a conversation with their reactionary neighbor and trying to speak from a perspective they think they would understand?

I guess maybe I'm confused about what makes this person a tankie, and what makes this conversation bizzar? Is it just that they're having an intentional conversation about politics, or..?

They are a tankie because they post in Hexbear, which is a tankie instance.

I also find it funny how a MAGA is a reactionary, but democrats are also reactionaries. Everyone I don't like is a reactionary! Not me though, I want to return to the good old status quo of the soviet union.

The idea of making wild assumptions and disingenuous conversations with your neighbour for the sole purpose of asking a group of strangers how to convert him is fucking bizarre.

IDK this one seems pretty sane except for the usual "China did nothing wrong ever." For example, they want their neighbor to not vote for Donald. The typical Hexbear is a LARPing MAGA or an accelerationist who wants votes for Donald.

Maybe we could wedge them away from Hexbear by posting flyers around their neighborhood asking why "socialist" China is producing hundreds of billionaires.

Idk man, we all make assumptions about people's politics. True, he went in with the intention of 'converting' him, but seems like he made an earnest attempt to understand his neighbor's (presumed) perspectives and spoke to those concerns. Certainly not the worst political interaction I've seen, especially on lemmmy. I don't know if I see anything problematic with what he said he said specifically, though. I guess it would be strange to be so singularly focused on people's political opinions, fair enough.

Maybe we just have different understandings of the word? Reactionary isn't really a political label, so much as it is just a description of a particular kind of motivation behind political policy. Any political party can have a reactionary perspective if it's motivated by opposing or reversing social change, and being anti-immigrant is, like, the original reactionary perspective, and it sounds like that was his neighbor's main political opinion. Even the soviets had some reactionary policies, it's not really a binary.

Actually that person seemed to have handled this in a remarkably mature, restrained, and polite fashion. They were somewhat open-minded that their neighbor could be a decent person, if not a bit presumptuous and naive at first seeing the Trump sign.

It's a bit bizarre seeing someone talk to a conservative for the first time, but honestly... this kind of approach would make a great model for how leftist should generally approach conservatives. This is in a whole different class of good compared to a lot of the bullshit they (and yall) say online.

Kudos to them, shame on the shamers.

Honestly that’s pretty exciting and I’ve never made that kinda progress with anybody! Personally, I would mix ideological progress with becoming friends outside of politics, since there was once someone very special to me whom I tried to convert, going too far without making much personal progress (also me doing some weird things I’m not too proud of), and it ended badly.

At least they're honest with their cult

Was my job working for a rural health department from 2016-2018.

Went to a less rural health dept from 2018-2023 and still ended up dealing with all the conservatives outside city limits anyway.
