I really don't want to be defending this guy, but reading what he said is kinda confusing.

But the expansion of Israel and its proxies is an absolute, fundamental necessity for the United States to have the steady leadership there."
Emphasis mine. His "but" seems to be in contradiction to all his direct "fundamental, period. Fundamental, period." I hate the short time these stupid debates give people because he really needs to fucking explain what "steady leadership" is supposed to mean there. Are we going to try to stop Isreals attempts to expand? I didn't really read that as directly connected to his positive affirmation of what he said was fundamental before it.
