i thought the title was literally talking about large drones and i got excited at the prospect of attaching one to myself like an autonomous techno-parachute and flying around or riding inside of one like a helicopter.

Here the regs are pretty restrictive about how big your drone can be without a licence. Something like 400 grams. People skirt it a lot

I think those come under light vehicle classification, and thus you'd be looking at the laws for small tractors etc. I can't remember what the weight limits on those are though. Quite low, it's just above motor cycles (which have their own licencing quagmire).
