I think their main focus is on features. If you want fast, you might want to check out @organicmaps@fosstodon.org.

[-] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 month ago

It doesn't seem that slow to me.

Maybe you could try Organic maps

[-] gigachad@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

It's almost the same speed on my device which has much lower hardware specs. You can open an issue on github, or look if it is already mentioned in one of the other 3,000 (!) open issues.

[-] mamus@fosstodon.org 0 points 1 month ago

@gigachad Afaik opening an issue about speed on the github doesn't yield the desired results

@mamus @gigachad @openstreetmap

This problem has been getting worse for years, they seem more interested in new premium subscription bloat than having an app that works at a usable speed.

[-] Radium@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 month ago

And posting it here will…?

@mamus @openstreetmap
It just getting worse the more they do to it.

It doesn't even seem to have a cache for locally rendered tiles so if you pan to a new area and pan back you get to wait a second time.

Have you tried the offline maps?

[-] mamus@fosstodon.org 5 points 1 month ago

@Schlemmy that is the offline map. Online maps are smooth

[-] Schlemmy@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 month ago

You're right! Damn.

[-] TheFrirish@jlai.lu 3 points 1 month ago

I'll come accross as rude but regardless just use organicmaps.org

OSMAnd is just a white elephant at this point.

[-] lemmus@szmer.info 3 points 1 month ago

For real, I came to this conclusion like a year ago, OM is the best maps for android rn

Something very expensive to maintain, but not very useful. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant

Actually I translated badly from French. I mean it's a very cluttered app that tries to do too many things. On long routes the battery consumption is really high, in order of 1% per minute if you put in a route that's more than 1000km long.

Because they render the map offline (and have a slow render engine)

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Make sure that you're using the "Version 2 (OpenGL) map rendering engine in the OSMAnd settings.

Using offline maps can also help, but I've never found it to be smooth like Google Maps (from years ago that I was using it).

I'm using an older Samsung Note, and don't have issues with the speed. It has improved quite a bit from maybe 2 years ago.

[-] pietervdvn@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Looks like V2. That one shows the grid for not-yet-rendered areas

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

I wonder if it's a cache/internet issue. Yes, zooming to extreme levels causes some delay. But scrolling through a map zoomed at a reasonable level should catch up very quickly on both offline and online map layers. At least, it does for me, and my phone is like 4+ years old.

[-] InsertUser@en.osm.town 3 points 1 month ago

@Showroom7561 @pietervdvn @openstreetmap

This is an offline render, internet speed shouldn't have any effect.

The lack of caching of previously rendered areas is annoying.

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

That is annoying.

Even though I use an offline layer, the online is actually faster to render. It's like the cache system is broken, even though it clearly works when the device is in airplane mode.

However, I will admit that OSMAnd is the least performant of the map apps that use OSM data (or any other map/navigation app, really).

[-] InsertUser@en.osm.town 2 points 1 month ago

@Showroom7561 @openstreetmap
Well yeah, if you get some beefy server somewhere else to do the rendering it will be quicker.
I don't know if Organic Maps and the like actually store vector tiles locally to get the speed up or what, but they're clearly doing something better.

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

I tend to only run mapping/navigation software offline, and this type of poor performance has only been noticeable on OSMAnd.

It's nowhere near as bad as it once was, but it's still not great.

[-] Quereller@lemmy.one 2 points 1 month ago

I just realized that the Version 1 renderer feels much snappier for me.

[-] Showroom7561@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Just tried it, and it's unbearable on my device. It may also depend on what map layer(s) you're using, and the device capabilities.

V1 was the previous render engine, when pretty much everyone complained that it was too sluggish. LOL
